After Ukraine, Russia now warns of military consequences if Finland and Sweden join NATO

Putin warns Sweden and Finland of joining NATO

Amid the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the former has warned Sweden and Finland of military consequences if they join NATO.

Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, on Friday, said that Moscow will have to respond with military consequences if Finland and Sweden join NATO. She stated “Finland and Sweden should not base their security damaging the security of other countries. Clearly, [the] accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO, which is first and foremost a military alliance, would have serious military-political repercussions that would demand a response from our country.” 

The move comes after Ukrainian President Zelensky thanked Finland for its support for the country during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Both Sweden and Finland had reiterated their unwavering support to Ukraine. Taking it to Twitter, the Ukrainian President tweeted, “Discussed with [Finnish President Sauli Niinistö] countering the aggressor. Informed about our defense, insidious shelling of Kyiv.” Later, he added, “Grateful to [Finland] for allocating $50 million [in] aid. It’s an effective contribution to the anti-war coalition. We keep working. We need to increase sanctions and [Ukraine] defense support.”

Zelensky also tweeted thanking Sweden, he posted, “Sweden provides military, technical and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Grateful to [Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson] for her effective support. Building an anti-Putin coalition together.” There has also been an ongoing debate about NATO membership that has been revived by Ukraine tensions. 

Threatening Finland with military recursions, the Russian Foreign Ministry, from their Twitter, handle tweeted, “#Zakharova: We regard the Finnish government’s commitment to a military non-alignment policy as an important factor in ensuring security and stability in northern Europe. Finland’s accession to @NATO would have serious military and political repercussions.”

Earlier the Russian forces on Friday unleashed airstrikes on several places in the capital city of Kyiv and one of the major reasons for the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine is that the former wants a guarantee from the western allies and NATO that Ukraine will not join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
