Despite global efforts to hold Beijing accountable for the suppression of Uyghur Muslims in the region, Imran Khan continues to defend China’s stance in Xinjiang.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has turned a blind eye to Uyghur Muslim persecution in China, claiming that the situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) is not what Western media depicts. In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Imran Khan defended “all-weather ally” China, saying that Pakistan’s ambassador to China, Moinul Haq, had visited XUAR and that the situation there is “not what the Western media depicts.”

Despite international efforts to hold Beijing accountable for the suppression of Uyghur Muslims in the region, Imran Khan, who has long portrayed himself as a champion of Islamic issues, continues to defend China’s policy in Xinjiang. However, Pakistani leadership is forced to openly subscribe to China’s policies due to its growing reliance on China for economic aid and diplomatic support, despite the fact that China is responsible for the genocide of Uyghur Muslims. During the Beijing Olympics 2022 opening ceremony, Khan defended Beijing on the Xinjiang issue, as well as the communist regime in the South China Sea and the One-China Principle.

According to a joint statement made after Imran Khan met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, the Pakistani side expressed its “commitment to the One-China Policy and support for China on Taiwan, the South China Sea, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet.” Islamabad has backed China on matters like the One China Policy and the South China Sea, which the West sees as arbitrary rules imposed by Beijing to further its expansionist ambition. The statement stated, “The Chinese side reaffirmed its support for Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and security, as well as encouraging its socioeconomic progress and prosperity.”
