Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett makes historic visit to UAE

Naftalli Bennett

In a historic move, Naftali Bennett, Israel’s Prime Minister, on Monday, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is for the first time that an Israeli leader has publicly met Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In a bid to strengthen ties with the Gulf, Naftali Bennett, the Prime Minister of Israel, on Monday, visited the United Arab Emirates. The move comes at a time when there is rising tension as many countries are trying to revive a nuclear deal with Iran. This is probably the first time an Israeli leader has, in open, met a UAE ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

The meeting between the two leaders was scheduled to go up to two hours but lasted for nearly about four long hours. The crucial meeting highlighted the geopolitical priorities of the Middle Eastern leaders, for whom, the threat of nuclear Iran is more important than finding a solution to the long-going Israel-Palestine conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also took the opportunity to highlight what observers describe as a new reality of the Middle East region. He said, “In my opinion, this is what the peace and the new reality this region is witnessing, and we are working together to ensure a better future for our children.” Later, on Monday, Prime Minister Bennett’s office also announced that Mohammed Bin Zayed has instantly accepted the former’s invitation to visit Israel but the date for his visit has not been finalized yet.

Earlier, in August 2020, both the countries- Israel and United Arab Emirates (UAE) have also signed the historic Abraham Accords, brokered by the Trump administration, marking the first-ever normalization of ties between Israel and an Arab Gulf country. Despite huge criticism from other countries of the Arab world, both Israel and UAE have gone ahead and stitched billions of dollars of tourism, trade, and transport.
