“Putin chose this war”, said Biden putting additional sanctions on Russia

Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden on Thursday hit Russia with a wave of new sanctions posts the Russian military attacks on Ukraine. The harsh sanctions are meant to punish the former country for its ruthless attacks on the latter, calling out Vladimir Putin, the Russian President. “Putin is the aggressor; Putin chose this war, and now he and his country will bear the consequences,” Biden said stating his stature on the events happening. He further announced a set of measures that will “impose a severe cost on the Russian economy, both immediately and over time.”

Under the new sanctions, “every asset that Russia has in America will be frozen”. It has targeted four Russian banks that hold more than $1 trillion in assets, including the country’s largest bank, Sberbank. This also includes export blocks on technology, limiting Russia’s ability to advance its aerospace and military sector. The US President also applied sanctions on “corrupt billionaires” and their families who live in proximity to the Kremlin.

Relying to  a question asked by a journalist, Biden said, “I didn’t say sanctions couldn’t stop him. The threat of the sanctions … imposing the sanctions and seeing the effect of the sanctions are two different thing and that he is going to begin to see the effect of the sanctions.” Taking it forward he said, “It’s going to take time. We have to show resolve so he knows what is coming. And so the people of Russia know what he’s brought on them. That’s what this is all about.”

Reiterating that US Troops will not be a direct part of the ongoing conflict, Biden also announced the deployment of ground and air forces to NATO’s eastern flank. “Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine but defend our NATO allies and reassure those allies in the east”, said Biden. US President Joe Biden addressed the nation in his first appearance post the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the White House East Room.
