81-year-old artist imprisoned for digital rape of minor for seven years

A case of digital rape has been registered in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida. According to the reports the accused, an artist by profession, had raped a minor girl for the last seven years. Reportedly, one of his workers trusted him as a guardian and sent his minor daughter to live with him to get a better education. As soon as the girl moved to Himachal Pradesh, where the accused is residing, he started sexually exploiting her.

After years of bearing the abuse, the minor girl finally started collecting proof against him. She recorded the accused sexual advances, mostly in the form of audio. The victim also shared her trauma of witnessing the abuse for years. She said that the accused used to beat her for opposing his brutal act. The minor then filed a complaint against him.

Based on the complaint, the police filed an FIR against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. This includes section 376 (rape), section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and POCSO Act. After a medical examination from the district hospital, the accused elderly man has been arrested from his house. Police are on the way to collecting as much evidence as possible so that the court can give the harshest punishment to the accused. The accused, Maris Rider, has been identified as a resident of Prayagraj. He was born in a Hindu family but later changed his religion to become Christian. He shifted from Prayagraj to Noida 20 years ago.

What is Digital Rape?

ACP Ankit Sharma talking about digital rape said that the term doesn’t mean raping a person via the internet. Digital Rape is made up of two words – Digital and Rape. The term digit generally means number but the dictionary also says that the word digit has also been associated with the body parts like the toe, thumb, and finger.

Earlier, digital rape was considered as molestation. But after the horrific Nirbhaya rape case in 2012, the news laws were passed in the parliament. The laws state that any forced penetration will come under rape and will be charged against anti-rape laws.

According to a few media reports, the punishment for such incidents includes at least 5 years of imprisonment. In exceptional cases, it can be extended up to 10 years or even life imprisonment. Some reports also state that such incidents are mostly done by their near and dear ones and so many of these incidents are not even reported.
