ABVP and Left clash in JNU over eating Non Veg during Ram Navmi; 16 injured
Students affiliated with the Left wing Student Union have called for a protest at Delhi Police Headquarters after there was a clash at JNU between them and students belonging to ABVP.
During the occasion of Ram Navmi on Sunday, students belonging to ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) clashed with students affiliated to Left Wing groups over the issue of non-vegetarian food being served in the hostel mess. It all started when ABVP students allegedly tried to stop other students of JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) from consuming non-vegetarian food on the occasion of Ram Navami. Students belonging to the right wing group- ABVP were also alleged to have assaulted the mess staff of the Kaveri Hostel on campus and even tried to stop them from supplying chicken. On the other hand, the ABVP students alleged that students belonging to the Left-Wing groups tried to stop Ram Navmi prayers at the Kaveri hostel.
Both sides have accused each other of throwing stones at the opposite sides which have resulted in several students being injured who have been taken to hospitals. As of now, the Delhi Police have registered an FIR against unidentified ABVP members on the complaint of some students while the administration at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has initiated a probe into the matter. So far, about 16 Students from both sides – Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – were injured in the clashes that took place in the campus yesterday evening.
