Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, conducted a roadshow in Kanpur’s Arya Nagar and Sisamau on Tuesday, the two assembly segments that the BJP lost to the Samajwadi Party despite the party’s wave in 2017.

Earlier in the day, Shah claimed in Dibiyapur, Auraiya district (80 km from Kanpur), that if the BJP was re-elected, farmers in Uttar Pradesh will not have to pay energy bills for the next five years.

In Kanpur, Shah began the roadshow atop a decorated truck at Vankhandeshwar temple in Sisamau assembly constituency, passing past P Road, Lenin Park, Anand Bagh, Sangeet cinema, Deputy Parao, Moolgunj, and Ghanta Ghar.

The home minister, joined by MP Satyadeo Pachauri, mayor Pramila Pandey, and respective constituency candidates, traveled for over 150 minutes along crowded roads amid a large crowd.

Thousands of saffron-colored balloons lined both sides of the road, and specially adorned gates were built at strategic locations.

Shah, who appeared to be encouraged by the response, waved to the crowds and threw garlands to the children in particular. Workers and leaders from the BJP marched forward, shouting “Jai Shri Ram.” Muslim voters are well-represented in the two constituencies where Shah campaigned. The BJP used to have a stronghold in Arya Nagar, which was known as General Ganj before delimitation, but they haven’t been able to win the Sisamau seat since it was established.

Last time, SP’s Amitabh Bajpai won Arya Nagar, and Irfan Solanki won Sisamau. Salil Vishnoi, the BJP’s MLC and vice president, is running in Sisamau, while Suresh Awasthi, a Brahmin, is running in Arya Nagar. Vishnoi, who had previously served as a three-term MLA until losing last time, is calling this his final hustings appearance.

Addressing a public rally Shah said, “Holi is on March 18, counting is on 10th, bring the BJP government to power on 10th, free gas cylinders will reach your house on 18th. No farmer will have to pay electricity bills for the next five years.”

“The Samajwadi Party has been wiped out. Western Uttar Pradesh has done the work of laying the foundation of the BJP government with more than 300 seats. In the third phase, this majority has to be made grander,” he said.

He also stated that the elections were being held to “strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hands and re-elect Yogi as Chief Minister.

Taking a jibe at SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Shah said, “Akhilesh asks what have we done? If someone has yellow-colored glasses, they’ll see everything in yellow only… kattas (guns) and goli (bullets) used to be made under Akhilesh’s government, now instead of ‘goli’, ‘gole’ (ammunition) are being made to fire against Pakistan.”

He accused the SP-BSP of damaging Uttar Pradesh’s economy and credited Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a five-year turnaround.

Claiming success on the law and order front under the Yogi government, he asked, “Can any Mafioso trouble you anywhere, can anyone encroach your land, play with the honor of mothers and sisters? Yogi Ji has ensured the migration of Mafiosi from Uttar Pradesh.”

“Yogiji has brought down dacoity by 72 percent, loot by 62 percent, murder by 31 percent, and rape by 50 percent,” he said.

Shah said: “When Modiji brought the Covid vaccine, Akhilesh termed it as Modi vaccine and asked people not to take it. But after tweeting against it for some time he himself took it out of fear. If Modi had not given vaccines to the 130 crore people, then would we have been as safe during the third wave?”
