Nation remembers Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru for their unparalleled contribution to India’s freedom on Shaheed Diwas

March 23rd is observed as Shaheed Diwas to pay the tribute to Indian Revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who was hanged to death by the British government in the year 1931 in the Lahore conspiracy case on the same day.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to all three freedom fighters on Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) and also said that they have made unparalleled contributions to India’s freedom struggle and they were great. On the occasion of Shaheed Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Biplobi Bharat Gallery at Victoria Memorial Hall at 6 pm via video conferencing in Kolkata.

The trio including Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru was found guilty of the murder of deputy police superintendent JP Saunders in 1928 to take revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. At that time the age of Bhagat Singh was 23, Shivaram Hari Rajguru was 22 and Sukhdev Thapar was also 23 when they were hanged to death in the Lahore Central Jail. To remember their unmatched heroism, several events and programs are organised across India in a bid to pay tribute to the iconic freedom fighters.

“India will always remember the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru. These are the great  freedom fighters, who made an unbeatable contribution to our freedom struggle,” said PM Modi in a Twitter post. Meanwhile, the newly-elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has declared Bhagat Singh’s death anniversary as a state holiday on March 23rd. The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwat Mann declared the state holiday in the Assembly and also requested the people to visit his ancestral village Khatkar Kalan in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. Bhagwat Mann had also mentioned that in all the government offices in the state, there should be portraits of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh only, in the recent Punjab elections.

Several leaders pay tribute on the occasion of Saheed Diwas for the iconic heroes. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari were among the leaders who paid their respects to the freedom fighters. ‘Amrit Mahotsava’ – the initiative to mark 75 years of independent India, also shared a special video showcasing the inspiring stories of the freedom fighters in the ‘shaheed special series’ on their official Twitter handle.
