New CEO of NITI Aayog will be an ex-bureaucrat who oversaw the Swachh Bharat Mission

The empowered Covid group for logistics management was headed by Parameswaran Iyer, a former IAS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and member of the 1981 batch. In 2009, he left the IAS to work for the World Bank. PM Modi was responsible for bringing him back to lead the Swachh Bharat Mission.

After Amitabh Kant’s term as CEO of NITI Aayog expires on June 30, the Narendra Modi government announced on Friday that Parameswaran Iyer, a retired IAS official, will take over. He will serve in that capacity for two years. Iyer, an ex-IAS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and member of the 1981 batch, served as the group’s empowered leader after its establishment in April. In 2009, he left the IAS to work for the World Bank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinstated him to lead the Swachh Bharat Mission, the initiative’s centerpiece.

Iyer made headlines in 2017 after he was photographed cleaning a pit latrine while visiting a Telangana village. PM Modi had praised the Swachh Bharat Mission chairman for his action during his Mann Ki Baat address since it had captured his attention. The prime minister had also tweeted, “This toilet pit emptying activity performed by the Drinking Water & Sanitation Ministry is outstanding!”
