PM Modi announces ‘Three Farm Laws to be taken back’

Three Farm Laws

Defending the three Farm Laws, Prime Minister said they were meant as reforms, mainly for small and marginal farmers in the country, and will be repealed in the Upcoming Parliament Session.

In a surprising move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today, on the occasion of Prakash Purab, announced the move to repeal the center’s three farm laws. The announcement comes just before the crucial Assembly Polls in the states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The moves come at the heart of massive farmer protests across the country that has been going on for over a year.

Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “Maybe something was lacking in our Tapasya, which is why we could not convince some farmers about the laws. But today is Prakash Parv, not the time to blame anyone. Today, I want to tell the country that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws.” The Prime Minister also urged farmers “to return home to their families and let’s start afresh”.

The Prime Minister defended the laws saying they were meant as reforms, mainly for small and marginal farmers in the country. He said, “Whatever I did was for farmers. What I am doing is for the country.” The three contentious farm laws -Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; (2) Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act and (3)Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 – enacted by the Parliament in September 2020, have been stoutly opposed by several farmers organizations. Several farmers groups across the nation have been holding widespread protests and agitation.

The move was welcomed by former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and he tweeted- “Great news! Thankful to PM @narendramodi ji for acceding to the demands of every punjabi & repealing the 3 black laws on the pious occasion of #GuruNanakJayanti. I am sure the central govt will continue to work in tandem for the development of Kisani! #NoFarmers_NoFood @AmitShah”.

Wayanad MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to his Twitter handle and quoting his earlier tweet, he wrote “देश के अन्नदाता ने सत्याग्रह से अहंकार का सर झुका दिया। अन्याय के खिलाफ़ ये जीत मुबारक हो! जय हिंद, जय हिंद का किसान! #FarmersProtest
