Akhilesh Yadav, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and the leader of the Samajwadi Party, will compete for the UP Assembly Election in 2022, according to the cited sources. Akhilesh was believed to have confirmed in November last year that he would not be contesting in the election. The Azamgarh Member of Parliament has never stood in a state election, not in 2012 or 2017 even when he became the country’s youngest chief minister in 2012. That time too he took the Legislative Council path.

Akhilesh’s local constituency is yet to be declared. According to speculations, he might be fielded from two seats, one of which could be Azamgarh’s Gopalpur.

Sources say the pressure on Akhilesh has mounted because Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is competing for the seat from Gorakhpur. Mulayam Singh’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav’s decision to join the BJP adds to the pressure on the Samajwadi Party, causing Akhilesh to reconsider his decision.

When Akhilesh reportedly said he won’t be contesting the assembly election, his party said the decision will be taken collectively. “BJP will be wiped out of Uttar Pradesh. The people of UP are with the Samajwadi Party. Whether or not Akhilesh Yadav will contest the assembly election will be decided by the party,” Aashish Yadav said at that time.

With the war of words between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, the campaigning for the high-voltage UP election has reached a frantic pitch. Akhilesh claimed that the central leadership had sent CM Adityanath home by fielding him from Gorakhpur after the BJP revealed his name. “But from where is Akhilesh Yadav contesting the election? Why don’t you announce it?” BJP’s election co-in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Thakur recently commented.

For the assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal have established an alliance, while the Nationalist Congress Party has announced a tie-up with the SP for both the Uttar Pradesh and Goa polls. The Trinamool Congress has said that it will not contest in Uttar Pradesh but will assist Akhilesh’s party, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will campaign for the Samajwadi Party.
