CAA will get implemented : Union Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a rally in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri . During the rally, Shah reiterated his stand on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)and said “Once the Pandemic gets over, the CAA will be implemented.” Mr. Shah is on a two-day visit to West Bengal and this is his first visit after getting defeated by TMC in the 2021 Assembly elections.

During his rally, he voiced against the TMC and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Shah in his speech compared his party with Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. He accused the TMC government of allowing illegal infiltrations while his government in the centre is trying to recognise refugees in the country. Shah alleged Mamata government is acting as a barrier to implement CAA while he strongly retained his stand to pursue their agenda to execute the act. Furthermore , the minister blamed the government for fermenting the divide among Gorkhas , Rajbanshis and Adivasi in North Bengal.

Home Minister Amit Shah said “It is difficult to prevent infiltration and smuggling without the help of local administration.” Shah also showed his concern for the deployed BSF to ensure a conducive political environment for better functioning.

The war of words between the two started when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rebuked and said “They are not winning 2024. CAA is their plan. Why are they not bringing it up in Parliament? They cannot play a one-sided game,”. Amid the press conference Ms. Banerjee said “We don’t want any citizen to be left out, unity is our strength. After one year, he [Amit Shah] has come here, he should hide his face.”

BJP in the last Assembly elections of the state had vowed to implement CAA if it comes to power. Centre notified about CAA in 2020 which seeks to ease the process of applying for citizenship by six minority communities . The legislation triggered sharp criticism from many people and protests were also seen in the country.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a three week visit to the seven states as a part of a mega cross country tour. In the tour he will attend many public, political and official events. The visit is seen by political analysts  as pre pre-polls tour which can help the party to strategize for the 2024 elections.
