Cabinet approves bill for merging three civic bodies of Delhi into one
On Tuesday, (March 22, 2022) the Union Cabinet approved a bill in this regard that will be discussed in Parliament during the ongoing budget session. By means of that instead of the present scenario East Delhi Municipal Corporation(EDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will be one civic body in Delhi.
Earlier in 2011, the government of Sheila Dikshit proposed the trifurcation of Delhi’s civic Body, MCD, and passed the Delhi Municipal Corporation(Amendment) Bill. Afterward the trifurcation of the former unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the 2012 elections, The Delhi Election Commission had postponed MCD elections activating Strong reactions from the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP).
While Talking to the media Delhi Chief minister Kejriwal raised a question that “people are questioning the move. It has been seven-eight years since the Bhartiya Janta Party is at the center, why didn’t they do the unification earlier.” Delhi CM had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow Municipal Corporation elections to take place in the national capital, saying postponing polls weaken the Democratic structure.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had then urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to let MCD elections take place in the national capital, saying postponing polls weakens the democratic system.
The party in power has been at the center for nearly eight years now. If they had to take the decision of unification the three civic bodies, why didn’t they do it all before the time of elections? Delhi CM asked Election Commission to finalize the dates for the MCD polls.
According to the sources, the Bill was much needed from that point of trifurcation of the corporation was uneven in terms of the territorial divisions and income-generating potential of each part.
