Congress in trouble again; Mukul Sangma along with 12 MLAs join TMC

Mukul SangmaNortheast Live

In a late-night coup, former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma along with 12 out 17 Congress MLAs join All India Trinamool Congress making TMC the principal opposition in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, in the late political development, joined the Trinamool Congress along with 12 out 17 Congress MLAs, making AITC the principal opposition party in the state. The former CM submitted a letter to Metbah Lyngdoh, the speaker in the Legislative Assembly, and informed him about the change.  Sangma, on a few occasions, had expressed his displeasure with the Congress high command and distanced himself from Vincent Pala, the president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).

The recent development is bound to give the ruling party of West Bengal a major boost in the North-East region. As per the top sources in Kolkata, Sangam, during the Bhabanipur By-polls, came to Kolkata and had a meeting with Prashant Kishore, the political strategist credited to make TMC win in the recently concluded Assembly Polls. Trinamool is on an expansion mode and is trying to take itself into National Politics. Also, this big development comes a day after Congress leader Kirti Azad and Ashok Tanwar as well as Pawan Varma joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC/TMC) in New Delhi in the presence of Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool is also targeting North-East as a part of its expansion strategy. They are contesting the Municipal Elections in Tripura and are going to contest Assembly elections in Goa. Recently, Sushmita Dev of the Congress also joined AITC, giving them a major boost in the state of Assam. This further downgrades the prospect of the grand old Congress party as it continues to struggle to keep its leaders intact.

As per the reports, the 12 Congress MLAs who jumped ship to the All India Trinamool Congress will address a press conference in Meghalaya’s Capital City, Shillong, this afternoon.
