Derek O’ Brein, on Tuesday, was suspended from the Upper House for the Winter Season. He was seen throwing the rule book at the Chair during the protests by opposition MPs over a bill for election reforms and the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha MPs.

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’ Brein, on Tuesday, was suspended from the rest of the Winter Season. The MP from West Bengal was alleged of throwing the rule book at the Chair during a discussion over the Election (Amendment) Bill 2021 and over the suspension of the 12 MPs.

The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021 was passed in the upper house and a day before this, it was passed in Lok Sabha. The opposition MPs were protesting against the bill and Derek, referring to the rule book, argued that the bill was being bulldozed through the house without providing enough notice to the members. Derek allegedly flung the rule book at the Chair. Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair at that time said that the book could have hit the chair or the Secretary-General or the officials sitting at the table.

Sasmit, following a motion moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Murleedharan in the Upper House, announced the suspension of Derek O’ Brein from the Upper House for the rest of the Winter Season. Derek, following this announcement, walked out of the house. Commenting on the issue, the Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said “The way TMC leader Derek O’Brien has thrown the rule book, this is not only the insult of the chair or the secretary-general or the table or the House, it is an insult to the entire country.”

Derek became the 13th MP to have been suspended from the Rajya Sabha. Earlier 12 MPs from various opposition parties were suspended for their unruly behavior during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament this year. This is not the first time that the quiz master-turned-politician was suspended from the House. Earlier, in September 2020, he was suspended with seven other MPs for protesting against the passage of contentious farm bills in din.
