Sonia Gandhi shows Mamata Banerjee ‘Who is the Boss’

Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President, today, called a meeting of senior opposition leaders to discuss the ongoing political scenario in the country. The meeting took place at Gandhi’s official residence at 10 Janpath. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee was not invited to the meeting.

The Congress President Sonia Gandhi, today, held a crucial meeting at her official residence- 10 Janpath in New Delhi. The opposition meeting was to discuss the current political developments in the country. However, Mamata Banerjee was not invited to the meeting. National Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar, CPM chief Sitaram Yechury, Senior DMK leader TR Baalu, National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah, and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge were also present in the meeting. The meeting was to discuss ways of forming a grand coalition of opposition parties and to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut were also present during the meeting at Sonia Gandhi’s residence. However, Mamata Banerjee was not invited to the meeting. The aim for not inviting Banerjee was clear- the grand old Congress party wanted to send out a crystal clear message that they are still the principal opposition party. This also comes at the backdrop of Mamata’s recent visit to New Delhi in which she met several leaders including BJP MP Subramanian Swamy but did not meet Sonia Gandhi. Earlier, Banerjee has also called for an opposition alliance without Congress.

The political war between All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and Indian National Congress to become the principal opposition party at the Pan-India level has been going on for quite a few times. TMC, in recent times, has poached a lot of leaders from Congress that also have big names like Sushmita Dev, Kirti Azad, and Mukul Sangma. Mamata, during his visit to the financial capital also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi by saying that a leader cannot be abroad half of the time.

By not inviting Mamata, Sonia Gandhi has clearly sent out a message that Congress is still the principal opposition party of India at the pan-India level.
