West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also alleged conspiracy in the Birbhum Violence Case. She also warned that her party (Trinamool Congress) will hit the streets if the Central Bureau of Investigation acts at the behest of the BJP.

Defending the criticism against the West Bengal Police in reference to the Birbhum Violence case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the government has taken all the appropriate actions including the suspension of a few senior officers and the good work done by the entire force cannot be neglected by the fault of one or two officers. The violence in Bogtui village of Birbhum took the lives of eight people (6 women and 2 children) after a local leader associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress was killed.

Banerjee said, “The state police comes to the aid of the people throughout the year, be it law and order or providing assistance to Covid-19 patients. It is not correct to blame the entire force for the fault of one or two.” Mamata also admitted the police were slow in taking action at the beginning and that they should have understood that something could happen in a retaliatory move against the murder of the local Trinamool leader. She stated that “There is a mistake on that front, but we have taken action – the OC and the SDPO have been removed, 22 people including the TMC block president (Anarul Hossain) have been arrested.”

The Chief Minister also accused all the opposition parties of trying to malign the image of the state police force and said, “If it happens tomorrow that there is not a single policeman on the road or is not available in police stations and does not protect us when we sleep at night, will police from Delhi come to do these duties?”

She also stated that she welcomes the decision to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) but also warned the central agency that they must not act at the behest of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). She said “We hope the CBI will do its job. However, if it starts acting at the behest of the BJP, we will hit the streets.”
