How does LGBT+ History Month 2022 promote Equality and Diversity?
LGBT+ History Month is a month-long annual celebration and remembrance of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans, and queer achievements and struggles across history. The fights and accomplishments of the LGBT+ community are often neglected in the mainstream education system leading to greater ignorance around the community. Every year LGBT+ History Month is celebrated in the month of February to educate everyone about the sacrifices made by the community in the face of social backlash against them.
LGBT+ History Month was first organized by Schools OUT, a UK-based, LGBT+ education charity in 2005 and ran throughout the month of February. Since then, it has been organized every year to raise awareness around the LGBT+ community and its history. For over 15 years, it has also been highlighting the need for recognizing the LGBT+ issues and historic events in all the sectors including education and business. The LGBT+ community has long been discarded by society and its contribution to society has never been recognized by the dominating heteronormative social culture. With LGBT+ History Month, the aim is to provide the formerly overshadowed community with deserved respect and acknowledgment.
LGBT+ History Month 2022 will take place from February 1 to February 28, 2022. The month of February also plays a key role in the history of the LGBT+ community as it witnessed the abolition of Section 28 in 2003, a policy that was a legislative designation for a series of laws across Britain prohibiting the “promotion” of homosexuality” by the local authorities. The law that existed from 1988 to 2003 led several organizations responsible for social care. Education support or rubbish collection to close or limit their activities to a great extent. So, February was chosen for LGBT+ History Month to mark an important moment in history for the community. LGBT+ History Month is dedicated to remembering the rights of the LGBT+ community, spreading knowledge about LGBT+ history, promoting inclusivity in the workplace, and building a safer world for young LGBT+ individuals.
The theme of LGBT+ History Month 2022 is ‘Politics in Art’. Art has been a powerful tool in the LGBT+ community’s fight against homophobia and for equality and rights. Therefore, this year’s theme will celebrate the contributions and achievements of the artists belonging to the LGBT+ community. This year’s LGBT+ History Month will revive the creativity, imagination, and innovation of LGBT+ artists and creators throughout history.
LGBT+ History Month is a time for not only increasing the understanding of the factors affecting the community but also elevating the visibility of the community in society. In fact, it is an occasion for acknowledging them and also celebrating their lives, struggles, and history. Moreover, the aim is to promote the welfare of LGBT+ individuals so that they can achieve their full potential in life. So, during LGBT+ History Month, the focus must be on discussing their discriminatory experiences to educate the heterosexual community and make them relate to the LGBT+ community.
