Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, has run into legal trouble after a Congress MLA submitted a petition to change the film’s name. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court suggested that the film’s title be changed  and the move comes just two days ahead of its release on Friday, February 25, 2022. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, an ace filmmaker, and director have landed in trouble after Congress MLA Amin Patel on Tuesday claimed that the movie misrepresents Kamathipura as a red-light area further showcasing the Kathiawadi community in a negative light. Several lawsuits have been filed in various courts to prevent the launch of the film based on the life of Gangubai who was a political figure in Mumbai’s Kamathipura neighborhood.

According to reports, the apex court made the suggestion in light of multiple pending legal petitions seeking to put a stop to the film’s release due to a variety of grounds. As per sources, Bhansali’s lawyer has stated that before the court continues the hearing tomorrow, February 24, he will seek directions from the filmmaker. While the Bombay High Court has rejected three petitions asking to have the names “Kamathipura,” “Kathiawadi,” and “China” to be removed from the Hindi film “Gangubai Kathiawadi.” A division bench led by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik was hearing two public interest litigations (PILs) filed by city MLA Amin Patel and one Hiten Mehta, as well as a petition filed by Shraddha Surve, a resident of the Kamathipura district in south Mumbai.

Alia plays the role of Gangubai in the film and the movie is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The movie portrays the story of a girl who is sold into prostitution by a suitor and how she rises to prominence in the underworld and the Kamathipua red-light district. The film will be released on silver screens on February 25. Apart from Alia,  the movie stars Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, and Shantanu Maheshwari. Talking about the controversy around the name of the film,  Alia Bhatt said that the controversy about the film doesn’t faze her. “Neither any controversy nor any comment bothers me. I don’t think anything bothers me beyond a point. Of course, I feel like there’s a certain novelty that just a part of a film holds. Whether the film is a good film or a bad film ..that doesn’t matter. The audience makes their final decision only after watching the film.. nothing that happens before or after can really change the fate,” she said.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s previous films, such as Goliyon Ka Raasleela Ram-Leela and Padmaavat, were released under different names. Padmaavat was planned to be released as Padmavati, while Goliyon Ka Raasleela Ram-Leela was supposed to be released as Ram-Leela.
