Sindhu Tai Sapkal an irreplaceable loss to Mankind: Rhythm Wagholikar

The well-known social worker, Padma Shri recipient Sindhutai Sapkal passed away in Pune after a prolonged illness on Tuesday 4th January 2022. The 73-year-old breathed her last at a private hospital in Pune. She was admitted to the hospital for over a month .

Sindhu Tai Sapkal has especially been known for her work for orphaned children over the last many decades. For her gallantry contribution to society and its welfare, Sindhutai Sapkal has received more than 300 awards from various national and international organizations, including the Nari Shakti award, India’s highest civilian award dedicated to women, The Padmashri, and several others.

Writer and social activist Rhythm Wagholikar share a note, offering his condolences to this great. He writes ‘ We all are aware of the benchmarking contribution that Smt. Sindhu Tai Sapkal has done for societal welfare setting an exemplary mark in the field of social service. For most of her life, the odds were not in her favor. In spite of the extreme poverty and immense hardships, Sindhutai got back up on her feet with a smile and an unparalleled zeal and enthusiasm. 

Certainly, she’s an incomparable woman and her tale would be inspiring and motivating for generations to come. Such phenomenons happen rarely. Every conversation with Maai would not only inspire you but had the potential to make a substantial impact upon the causality of your intellectual development. Bowing down to this great- Rest in Peace Maai!’
Sapkal often referred to just as ‘Sindhutai’ or ‘Mai’ is often called the ‘Mother of a thousand orphans’. Sindhu Tai adopted close to 2,000 orphans and is grandmother to even more.
