Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canada will decide in the next weeks whether or not to allow Huawei into the country’s next-generation 5G wireless networks, and that major telecommunications companies have already begun to remove Huawei from their networks.
As phone carriers prepare to roll out fifth-generation technology, which is designed to support a large expansion of networks to facilitate medical gadgets, self-driving cars, and other uses, Canada and its security agencies have been weighing whether to utilize Huawei equipment.
Two of Canada’s three major telecom carriers have already stated that they will not be using Huawei for their 5G networks. Bell Canada has chosen Ericsson of Sweden as its provider, while Telus Corp. has chosen Ericsson and Nokia. Ericsson and Rogers have a long-standing relationship.
 Mr. Trudeau said at a news conference, ÂWe have actually seen that many Canadian telecommunications companies, if not all of them, have started to remove Huawei from their networks and are moving forward in ways that donÂt involve them as a companyÂ.
ÂWe continue to weigh and look at the different options. We will no doubt be making announcements in the coming weeks. The Canadian government is studying the use of Huawei as Canada and China are coming off a dispute that Canada’s foreign minister has said the country will never forget.
