From Egg Brief to Award-Winning Script
Mollie Leivars described the unexpected journey of creating her award-winning script. “The brief was simple: the story had to be under five minutes and involve an egg,” she recalled. “I had a free hour and decided to write about a teenage girl who discovers she’s pregnant just as her school assigns a project involving an egg to teach responsibility. For her, the egg becomes a powerful metaphor for her hidden pregnancy.”
Leivars admitted she didn’t anticipate the recognition her script would receive. “I wrote it and sent it off without expecting much,” she said. “When I got an email from the head of the awards asking me to call him, I panicked, thinking I’d done something wrong. Instead, I found out I was shortlisted. Winning was a surreal experience. I wasn’t prepared at all – my glasses and phone were on my lap, and when they announced my name, everything just fell.”

Career Impact and Future Aspirations
Winning the award marked a significant turning point for Leivars. “It wasn’t just about the award itself; it was about someone taking the time to read and appreciate my work,” she explained. This recognition boosted her confidence and opened new doors in her career.
Discussing her directorial vision, Leivars emphasized the importance of collaboration. “I work with a small, close-knit team, which makes communication easier. I value their input to ensure the project stays true to its vision,” she noted. This collaborative approach helps her balance the multifaceted roles of writer, producer, and director.

Balancing Multiple Roles
Leivars candidly discussed the challenges of juggling multiple responsibilities as an independent filmmaker. “Once I wrote the script, producing it was chaotic because I was learning on the go. My team, who are also my friends, helped me navigate the process,” she said. “Having written the script, I had a clear vision of where things needed to be, which made directing a bit easier.”
