Why is the Sikh community not safe in Pakistan?

Day by day attacks on the Sikh community is increasing in Pakistan. Two Sikh men were shot dead by unknown muggers in Pakistan’s Peshawar. There are approximately 15000 Sikhs living in Peshawar. And most people who belong to the Sikh community manage their own businesses. Sikh community start protesting on roads against the criminals and demanded justice for the victims.

On Sunday 15 may 2022 two Sikh community people are shot dead by two unknown gunmen. People who died both belong to the Sikh community one is Saljeet Singh (42) and Ranjeet Singh(38). According to Peshawar police, both men were dead on the spot . Sources say that the victims had business of spices in Surbands bata toll market.

Non of the terrorist groups have taken the responsibility of the attack up till now. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa  Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has shown condemnation towards the dead. He asked the police in his statement to take rapid and strong action against the criminals and gave surety to the victim’s families that justice will be proclaimed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif post a tweet in which he said “Strongly condemn the killing of our Sikh citizens in Peshawar, KP. Pakistan belongs to all its people. Have ordered a high-level inquiry to ascertain facts. The killers will be arrested and meted out exemplary punishment. My most sincere sympathies to the bereaved families’’.

This is the second attack in the last eight months, last year in September well known Sikh ‘Hakeem’ (Unani Medicine) was shot dead by unidentified attackers. In 2018 Sikh community head Charanjeet Singh was also killed by unknown attackers in Peshawar. The ratio of Sikh community people who were killed by attackers did not stop there as the famous Journalist Ravinder Singh was also killed in 2020.

Apart from this Punjab’s former chief minister Amrinder Singh also post a tweet regarding Saljeet Singh and Ranjeet Singh. He said “Another killing of two Sikhs in Pakistan. Two shopkeepers, Ranjeet Singh &Saljeet Singh shot dead in Peshawar. This is highly condemnable. I have always said @GovtofPakistan only does lip services to Sikhs without ensuring their security. Request @PMOInduia to take serious notes.”
