BCCI: India to play 3 Tests and 3 ODIs in SA, T20Is to be held later

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Saturday made an official statement that India’s upcoming South Africa tour would comprise three ODIs and three Tests while the planned four T20Is would be rescheduled later due to the threat of Covid omicron variant. Earlier, the senior official had indicated that the BCCI is not looking for a postponement as the sports body is convinced that the bio-bubble being created by the CSA will be safe and secure for the players.

Shah told ANI, “BCCI has confirmed CSA that the Indian team will travel for three Tests and three ODIs. The remaining four T20Is will be played at a later date.”

The tour was originally planned to comprise of three Tests, three ODIs, and four T20 Internationals and was scheduled to start on December 17 at Johannesburg. However, Shah, in a previous statement, said that the tournament might be pushed back one week keeping in mind the growing safety concerns.

“We are discussing pushing back the series by a week due to the threat of the Omicron COVID variant and we are awaiting the Indian government nod, both boards are in constant touch and everything is being discussed. The health and safety of our players are of utmost importance,” the secretary had told ANI.

The cricket boards of both countries are in constant touch to ensure players’ safety during the tour amid the omicron threat, according to the reports. “Players’ security and health has always been BCCI’s first priority, we will do everything possible for this. We will see what happens in the days to come,” said the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday.

Earlier, Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports had also made it clear that BCCI should consult the government before making any decision of sending the Indian cricket team to South Africa as there is a health concern regarding the emergence of a new Covid19 variant.
