Rahul Gandhi “Hinduism isn’t about hate, Hindutva is”; BJP hits back
Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday, addressing a Congress programme said Hinduism is not the same as Hindutva. He said “Is Hinduism about beating a Sikh or a Muslim? Hindutva, of course, is.”
Addressing an All India Congress Committee (AICC) orientation programme on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi drew a distinction between Hinduism and Hindutva. He said, “We say there is a difference between Hindutva and Hindu religion. It is very simple logic – if you are a Hindu then why do you need Hindutva? Why do you need this new name?”
Rahul further added Congress followed India’s cultural value of thousands of years and that Hinduism and Hindutva are poles apart. He also said Is Hinduism about beating innocent Sikhs or Muslims? No, but Hindutva is. Is Hinduism about killing Akhlaq? I have read the Upnishads and nowhere it is written to kill an innocent man. But, I can see it in Hindutva. Gandhi also said that Lord Shiva swallowed the entire universe.
The ruling party at the Centre- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to hit back at the Congress party and particularly against Rahul Gandhi. Sharing the video of the blooper, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, “See the culmination of knowledge of “Shiv Bhakt” Rahul Gandhi.” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “It is very sad that the Congress party is attacking Hindutva.” Patra also added “Salman Khurshid compares Boko Haram and ISIS with Hinduism. Shashi Tharoor says ‘Hindu Taliban’. Leaders like Digvijaya Singh and Mani Shankar Aiyar use words like ‘saffron terrorism’ against Hinduism. This is no coincidence. It is Rahul Gandhi, the leader, who has taught the others to make such statements against Hinduism.”
Netizens were quick to figure out the mistake in Gandhi’s statement. Many people trolled him by saying that he should get classes on Hinduism as Shiva did not swallow the entire universe but he swallowed the poison and hence Shiva is also known as Neelkantha.
Rahul further said that the Congress party’s ideology is alive, vibrant but has been overshadowed because the party has not propagated the ideology among people aggressively. Today, whether we like it or not the hateful ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has overshadowed the loving, affectionate, and nationalistic ideology of Congress, the former Congress president said adding that they have to accept this.
The Congress will be conducting a nationwide mass awareness programme, titled Jan Jagran Abhiyan between November 14 to November 29 to highlight the anti-poor policies of the Centre.
