Rajiv Gandhi’s convict released after 31 years

Yesterday the Supreme Court took a big decision in the murder case of the late Rajiv Gandhi.  The apex court ordered the release of A.G Perarivalan, one of the seven convicts in the former Prime Minister’s assassination case. Under the Article 142 of the constitution, his release order passed after 31 years making him now free from life imprisonment punishment.

Perarivalan was arrested at the age of 19 on June 11, 1991. The crime of Perarivalan is that he purchased the battery which was used in Rajiv Gandhi’s murder. He was killed in a bomb blast in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur on May 21. 50-year-old Perarivalan told in his appealing file that the government of Tamil Nadu decided to release him but the governor kept the file for a long time and then send that file to the President.  In this case hearings are conducted by the supreme court and the case is going on from 1991 to 2022.

In the Rajiv Gandhi’s handgun case total 7 people are declared criminals and for all seven criminals the death sentence was declared but in 2014 the highest court converted the punishment into lifetime impresonmentl, and then all criminals knocked the gate of SC.  In  2016 and 2018 late  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister  Jai Lalita also demand favor from the governor to release Perarivalan.

After 31 years Peraririvalan returned to his home where his parents were waiting for his release. He was welcomed by his family ,later he thanked Tamil Nadu’s, Chief Minister, M.K Stalin. On his release A.G told that ‘’  Now I release from lockup I have just come out. It has been 31 years of a legal battle. I have to breathe a bit. Give me some time.”
