Sam Bahadur movie review: Vicky Kaushal plays the lead role in an overly dramatic picture

The film “Sam Bahadur,” starring Vicky Kaushal, hit theatres on December 1. A biopic of Sam Manekshaw, the first Field Marshal of India, is called “Sam Bahadur.” Meghna Gulzar and stars Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh direct the film. Vicky is reunited with his ‘Raazi’ in the film.

Sam Manekshaw’s vibrant personality and impressive career have long begged for a biographical film. The 150-minute film, directed by Meghna Gulzar, highlights the pinnacles of his personal and professional life and is as awe-inspiring and reverent as that soldier who appears on the screen briefly before bowing out, his duty completed.

Some people are naturally drawn to biographical films, and Sam Bahadur had a devoted following. However, the movie suffers from being overly dramatic, with the background music overpowering the significant moments and the tall people on screen. Vicky Kaushal, who plays Mankeshaw, is the only one who avoids this and maintains her tall stature throughout the movie. In this role, Kaushal finds the greatest challenge and excels at it.

What does Maya, daughter of Sam Manekshaw, have to say about Sam Bahadur?

Maya, the daughter of Sam Manekshaw, has seen “Sam Bahadur,” starring Vicky Kaushal. In an interview with Indian Express, she disclosed that she had seen it twice.

“They made the film to make the country proud of whatever it was,” Maya remarked. However, the last two seconds of the movie, when you turn to smile at the audience, are the part that always makes me cry. I’ve seen the movie twice, and each time I’ve cried. Every time, I just die over that.

Sam Bahadur: Movie Cast & Storyline

When Sam (Vicky Kaushal) earns his spurs at the Military Academy early in the movie, we first see him. Holding her own, Sanya Malhotra plays the charming young Silloo in a charming romance that ends with her becoming his wife. Despite suffering severe injuries, he survives his time in Burma during World War II.

The recognition he received immediately following his incredible recovery proved that he was destined for greatness. The British, who had pinned the bravery medals on his chest, had set the stage for the brutal Partition and a divided Army. Manekshaw was never close to his friend Yahya Khan (Ayyub, nearly undetectable beneath layers of prosthetics), who stayed behind in what would become Pakistan.

Manekshaw was a key player in the war of 1971. His astute planning enabled Mrs Gandhi to subdue the Americans and decisively defeat the Pakistani army. The movie portrays her (Fatima Sana Shaikh) as a leader who doesn’t hesitate to make difficult choices. Still, it is less complimentary of Nehru (Neeraj Kabi), who is frequently shown to be unsure of his course of action. However, these political pranks, which featured several influential people at the time, such as Sardar Patel (Govind Namdeo) and other Cabinet members, don’t seem to have the same impact as they ought to. That also applies to the entire movie.

However, Kaushal’s spot-on appearance—sparkling eyes and a stiff mustache—won me over. Even though it’s hard to play a character this close to the real one without becoming caricatured, he becomes Sam Bahadur.
