Biden meets with Kishida, Japan’s prime minister

On Monday, US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Fumio Kishida, Japan’s new prime minister, who took over from Yoshihide Suga after winning the governing party’s election late last month. In a message to the newly-installed leader, US President Donald Trump pledged to cooperate with Japan to counter Beijing’s growing threat in the East China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. They also agreed to deal with North Korea’s irritating campaign, which has recently launched multiple missiles in waters just off Japan’s coast. Kishida told reporters shortly after the conversation that Biden was helpful.

The Senkaku Islands (also known in China as the “Diaoyutai Islands”) are a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea that have been the source of a territorial dispute between Tokyo and Beijing since at least the early 2010s. China has hastily constructed artificial islands with military equipment in the vicinity, claiming the Senkaku Islands as its “inherent domain.” Joe Biden underlined the US commitment to safeguarding the Senkaku Islands in phone discussions with Japan’s incoming prime minister in the wake of China’s increased activities in the East China Sea.
