Farmers Protest

The farmer’s protest to be called off is what the deliberation is going on at the Singhu Border after the center’s draft proposal has gone to the 5 member committee. A big section of the protesting farmers is willing to call off the year-long protest against the center’s three-farm bills.

As per the sources, protesting farmers at the Singhu border is planning to call off the year-long protest against the central government’s three-farm laws. The move comes after the Center has given a written assurance that the demands made by the farmers which also include a legal guarantee for Minimum Selling Price (MSP) will be met.

According to the top sources, the center has told the farmers’ unions that they will be forming a committee to decide the issue of the Minimum Selling Price and also all the police cases against the farmers including cases of stubble burning will be dropped. The committee on MSP will consist of top officials and experts both from the center and the states. The committee will also have agricultural experts from the umbrella body of farmer unions, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). Regarding the compensation for the farmers who lost their lives while the protest was on, the center said that the governments of UP and Haryana had, in principle, agreed to similar measures.

The decision to call off the protest has created a split in the Samyukt Kisan Morcha as some farmers are willing to call the protest off while others are reluctant to carry on the protest. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) led by the farmer leader Rakesh Tikait however, is clear on their approach and is unwilling to call off the protest.

As of now the talks regarding the decision to call off the protest are going on at the Singhu border and more such rounds of talks are expected before taking the final call. The SKM at the Singhu Border has been at the epicenter of the entire farmers’ agitation that has been going on for a year and if they call the protest off, then one can fairly assume that the agitation will be over.
