An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in a low-intensity explosion on Sunday at a convention centre in the Kalamassery, neighbourhood of Kochi, Kerala, targeting a congregation of Christians. Ammonium nitrate, a timer, and a battery were discovered as byproducts of the explosion. One person died and two more were critically hurt in the explosion. More than twenty others were taken for emergency care. The National Security Guards (NSG) bomb disposal squad discovered bomb remnants, leading them to view the incident as a terror attack. Additionally arriving at the location is a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Investigators are looking into the incident from a number of perspectives. When asked why a Christian congregation was attacked, officials in the security establishment responded that Kochi has historically been a centre for Jews, so it’s possible that the Jehovah’s Witness congregation was mistaken for a Jewish community or that the attack was intended specifically for the congregation. They mentioned that, in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the region has recently seen a number of pro-Palestine demonstrations. They also mentioned a virtual speech given on Friday by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal at a rally hosted by the Solidarity Youth Movement in Malappuram. The youth branch of the outlawed Jamaat-e-Islami is called the Solidarity Youth Movement.
Additionally, a team from the National Security Guard (NSG) has been sent from Delhi to the location. Eight members of the National Security Guard, including an officer, are reportedly en route to Kerala to investigate the explosion of the bomb. By this evening, the team should arrive at the site of the bomb blast.
The National Security Group (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) were instructed to arrive at the location for investigations earlier by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The action was taken in accordance with NSG chief MA Ganapathy’s orders. Ganapathy sent out the bomb disposal team, which consisted of specialists versed in explosive materials and sniffer dogs. Shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave the order, the NSG’s bomb disposal unit in Delhi was relocated.
