World Earth Day is observed to highlight the importance of environmental conservation initiatives. 1970, it was initially observed on US college campuses months after Santa Barbara’s catastrophic oil disaster. Since then, the movement has inspired over a billion people in more than 192 nations.

The concept came from Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes, who were severely affected by the declining state of the American environment. Their goal was to channel the enthusiasm of the student demonstration into the growing public awareness of air and water pollution. They both decided that April 22 would see high student participation. Earth became a global community by 1990, transcending national boundaries as it changes our viewpoints and encourages us to see ourselves as not separate from nature.
