BJP turncoat Babul Supriyo meets TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata

Former Union Minister and Two-time Member of Parliament from Asansol (West Bengal), Babul Supriyo, on Monday, met TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata. This comes two days after Babul had joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

The singer-turned-politician was formally inducted into the TMC/AITC by the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Alongside Abhishek, Rajya Sabha MP Derek OÂBrien was also present.

This comes after Babul, a month ago, announced retirement from active politics. Taking to his Facebook account, he then wrote that he would be quitting from active politics and that he wonÂt be joining any political party. Recently the two-time BJP MP was shown the door from the Modi 2.0 Cabinet Reshuffle. The singer-turned-politician had been the Union Minister in both the Modi Cabinet in 2014 and 2019 (till reshuffle). One of the major reasons he joined the TMCÂs camp is said to be his deteriorating relationship with Dilip Ghosh, BJP Bengal President. Moreover, his security was downgraded recently by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Babul met Mamata on Monday, two days after he was inducted into the Trinamool Congress. After meeting Banerjee, Babul said, ÂIt was great meeting Didi. We had a very good discussion. I thanked her for giving me an opportunity to work for Bengal and serve the people. I am really touched by the affection and warmth of Didi and Abhishek Banerjee.Â

Talking about his role, Supriyo told reporters, ÂI have nothing to say. It is for our party and Mamata Didi to decide. It is her prerogative.Â

Babul, praising his new boss said, ÂI want the captain of our party, Mamata Banerjee to become the Prime Minister in 2024. Opposition plays an important role in a democratic system. Nobody can deny the fact that Mamata Banerjee is among the frontrunners for the prime ministerial post.Â

Earlier, on Saturday, as soon as the picture of Babul with Abhishek Banerjee surfaced on the net, there was a storm on social media. A lot of Netizens criticized and trolled him for his decision and called him a betrayer and someone who lacks commitment and loyalty. His former colleagues in the Bengal BJP Unit also targeted him. BJP MP from Barrackpore, Arjun Singh said ÂI donÂt know how he joined the Trinamool Congress as his song ÂAe Trinamool Aar Na is still there. Now, he will sing what and for which party.Â

Supriyo is not the first BJP leader to switch the camp, after the BJPÂS defeat in recently concluded assembly elections, Mukul Roy, National Vice-President of BJP switched his side. He along with his son joined the Trinamool Congress, a party from which he came.
