Jignesh Mevani & Student Leader Kanhaiya Kumar to join Congress today at AICC HQs

As per Jignesh Mevani, an Independent MLA from Gujarat, both Mevani and his close friend Kanhaiya Kumar are set to join the grand old Congress party today at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi at 03:00 pm.

Last Saturday, Dalit leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani told media persons that he and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar will be joining Congress on September 28 on the occasion of Bhagat Singh Jayanti. As per reports, the Congress party is keen to put up a grand show as both the young leaders are coming to its fold. Posters, in the early morning, have been put up outside the Congress office ahead of their joining. They both are set to join Congress at 3 pm today in the presence of Rahul Gandhi.

Jignesh Mevani had been open about his new endeavor while Kanhaiya Kumar so far had maintained silence on his joining. If reports are to be believed, Kanhaiya has not been on good terms with his party-CPI in recent times. An internal split within the CPI over KanhaiyaÂs promotion is said to have triggered him and prompted him to switch camps. As per media reports, CPI general secretary D Raja had earlier asked the student leader to address a presser on 21st September to refute the speculation of him joining the Congress. However, Kumar didnÂt turn up at the press conference. Kanhaiya had joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He was a CPI candidate from the Begusarai constituency in Bihar and was defeated by Giriraj Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

When asked about the speculation about Kumar joining Congress, Raja said, ÂLet us see.Â

A section of CPI leaders from Bihar, on September 26, met Kumar and tried to persuade him to change his mind however Kanhaiya had told them that he should be made the state party chief and the chairman of the partyÂs top election committee that decides the selection of candidates for elections.

Earlier, Hardik Patel, a young leader and close friend of both Mevani and Kumar, also joined Congress. Patel rose to fame through the Patidar Agitation.

These two young leaders are supposed to provide fresh and new energy to the grand old party which is desperately in need of some sort of revival before the 2024 general elections.
