Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti Under House Arrest

On Sunday midnight, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and PeopleÂs Conference leader Sajjad Lone have been placed under house arrest in the midst of turmoil in the Kashmir valley.

In an official statement it is said, ÂThere will be a complete bar on holding any kind of public meetings or rallies during the period of operation of this order. It should be noted that there will be no curfew in the place as reported in the section of media.Â

Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, ÂHow ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people & their voices are being muzzled in J&K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India.Â

Omar Abdullah also took to Twitter to express his dissent against the house arrest, ÂI believe IÂm being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight & the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then IÂll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us.Â

Mobile and internet services in many vulnerable places of J&K have been suspended as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. School, colleges and various educational institutions have been shut down.

Yesterday evening Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with top security and intelligence officials. The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary and other senior officials.

Speculation is rife that the Modi government is all set to repeal the much controversial article 35A and article 370. Both the articles are the bone of contention in India and the BJP has been always been very aggressive to revoking both the articles that grant some special rights and privileges to the people of J&K.

The Union Cabinet has scheduled a meeting on Monday at 9:30 AM at the PMÂs house in Delhi.
