Sidhu resigns as PPCC Chief; Captain Amarinder Singh in Delhi

Tuesday was a high voltage day for the Congress party as a series of events took place. The day started with the news break of Navjot Singh Sidhu suddenly resigning from the post of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Chief in the afternoon. He announced this decision on Twitter by attaching the resignation letter which he wrote to Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. This was followed by another tweet from the former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh targeting Sidhu. Captain, taking a dig at Sidhu, tweeted, ÂI told you soÂhe is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of Punjab.

Soon the news of Captain leaving for New Delhi from Chandigarh airport started to emerge. It was speculated that he is going to Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda and a possible switchover for the Captain is on the cards. However, this speculation was brushed off by Amarinder Singh’s Media Advisor Raveen Thukral. Taking to Twitter, Thukral wrote, ÂToo much being read into Captain AmarinderÂs visit to Delhi. HeÂs on a personal visit, during which heÂll meet some friends and also vacate Kapurthala house for the new CM. No need for any unnecessary speculation.Â

The infighting in the grand old party doesnÂt seem to get over anytime soon. With SidhuÂs sudden resignation, the Congress, particularly the Gandhi duo (Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi) are in trouble again. It was Rahul and Priyanka who promoted Sidhu to the post of PPCC chief and chose to sideline Veteran Captain Amarinder Singh. The reason for SidhuÂs resignation is still unclear but if reports are to be believed, he is unhappy with the Cabinet rejig that took place a few days ago. What is surprising is that Charanjit Singh Channi, the new Punjab CM who was seen continuously escorted by Sidhu was unaware of the resignation.

Following SidhuÂs decision, there were few others from the Punjab Congress unit that followed him. The first person to resign in solidarity with Sidhu was Razia Sultana who was recently sworn in as a Cabinet Minister. She said, ÂSidhu Sahab is a man of principles. He is fighting for Punjab and Punjabiyat. As per sources, Congress High Command, till now, has not accepted Navjot Singh SidhuÂs resignation. Punjab Ministers Pargat Singh and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring met Sidhu and requested him to withdraw his decision.

Captain, who is speculated to meet the top brass of BJP had further said that Sidhu is an unstable man and can join any other political party before the Punjab Elections.
