Dr. Archit Aggarwal is a leading dermatologist in Faridabad and has established the KDC Clinic to treat skin and cosmetic-related issues, including vitiligo. To educate the public, Dr. Aggarwal shares vital information related to vitiligo.
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects millions of people across the globe. In this disorder, the patient’s skin turns white as skin pigmentation is lost. Dr. Aggarwal reassures patients and offers reliable treatment with the hope of the best possible outcomes.
Dr. Archit Aggarwal, states, ‘People need to understand vitiligo condition and not rely on myths and inaccurate information. Today, we can manage the vitiligo condition in a better way and even proceed with pigmentation to cover the affected areas.
As a dermatologist, I wish to create more awareness of this autoimmune disorder and help the affected people as much as possible”. Dr. Archit states that vitiligo is not contagious and cannot be transmitted through physical contact or exposure. In fact, it results from certain genetic and environmental factors and interactions among them.
Further, he adds that poor hygiene or cleanliness does not cause vitiligo. It also does not accelerate the progression of the disease. In medical terms, the loss of pigmentation is because of the absence of melanin, which gives colour to the eyes, skin and hair. In this condition, melanocytes, the cells which produce melanin, are destroyed.
Also, vitiligo is not restricted to people with dark skin tones but can occur to people with varied skin tones and ethnicities. It can happen to anyone across the globe and is not restricted to any particular ethnicity or race. It is more visible in people with a darker skin tone.
He also busts the myth that vitiligo occurs due to excessive sun exposure or sunburn. But ultraviolet (UV) radiation can accelerate the condition’s progression and increase the contrast between the normal skin and depigmented patches. Hence, he advises patients suffering from vitiligo should limit their sun exposure, regularly apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing.
Dr. Archit Aggarwal advises that despite the fact there is no guaranteed cure for vitiligo, its management is possible. With advanced research in vitiligo treatment, it is now possible to control the progress of vitiligo, treat the affected area with pigment and improve the appearance of the affected skin. Patients with vitiligo should seek the advice of a dermatologist for suitable treatment plans and procedures.
He shares a case study of a 19 YO female who had a large depigmenetd patch on left side of neck and chin since age of 5 years. It was progressing at slow pace. Further, after it attained a final shape and size, there was no further progression.
The patient did not have a history of vitiligo, hypothyroidism or diabetes. On the basis of clinical diagnosis, the patient suffered from segmental vitiligo. She was prescribed oral mini pulse of betamethasone, topical tacrolimus and PUVASO but with no positive outcome. However, Dr. Archit Aggarwal recommended suction blister grafting followed by PUVASOL therapy. The patient had to undergo two sessions of suction blister grafting followed by PUVASOL therapy. The treatment was successful as complete repigmentation was attained with no recurrence of lesions on 6 months of follow-up.
