“I turned down a lot of offers for Al Nassr,” says Cristiano Ronaldo

On Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo was formally presented by Al Nassr as the Saudi Arabian club’s new superstar. There he told that he had turned down multiple offers from Europe and North America. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus player has signed a contract with the Saudi Pro League for the duration of two and a half years. According to sources, he will be receiving $75 million per year which makes him the highest-paid player in history. 

 

At the press conference, Ronaldo stated that “I’m extremely proud to make such a big decision this big in my life. In Europe, my work is done. I have had a lot of achievements and have played for the most important clubs in Europe. Now, this is a new challenge which I am ready to face.” He further added, “A fact less known is that I had a plethora of opportunities in Europe, Brazil, Australia, America, Portugal and many other clubs tried to sign me as well. However, I had already given my word to Al Nassr.” Talking about the reason behind taking this opportunity, he said, “My aim is to give a different vision of this country and football. This is the reason I took this opportunity and I will work hard towards it.”

 

 

The 37-year-old player will be playing outside of Europe for the first time and has won five Ballon d’Or awards and five Champions League titles.  Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was terminated back in November 2022 after a TV interview where in he criticized manager Erik ten Hag and the Glazer family who are the club owners. It was during the world cup 2022 which was held in Qatar in November and December when Al Nassr, the 18-time Saudi champions made an offer to Ronaldo. The deal however was not confirmed until December 30.
