New Zealand’s full-time captain Kane Williamson has been out of the National side since March 2023 due to a knee injury. On Monday, the Coach of the New Zealand team, Gary Stead made a statement regarding the return of the Star player in the squad for the Cricket World Cup that is to be held in India this year. He said, “Williamson has two weeks to prove his fitness for the World Cup this year.”

Kane Williamson got injured in the opening match of the Tata IPL 2023. While saving a six, Williamson injured himself, forcing him to miss the whole IPL season, New Zealand’s series against Pakistan, and UAE. He has been out of the scene since. The 33-year-old has been travelling to England with the team, raising the hope of his comeback ahead of the World Cup.

On being asked about Williamson’s return to the side, Coach Stead replied, “We have almost two weeks left till we announce our squad for the World Cup. Talking about Williamson’s comeback, he is in rehab mode, he is batting well in nets and it is a delight to watch. There is still a lot of work we need to do but a player like him is a true match-winner.”

Kane has scored more than 6000 runs in the One-day format making him one of the greats of the format. He has also led the team in the 2019 CWC final, 2021 WTC final, and 2021 T20 WC final, proving to be a valuable asset to the team. Willamson is also one of the Players in the Fab Four. His Calm persona and the ability to understand the game well makes him a great captain and his absence in the Cricket World Cup 2023 may prove to be a huge loss for the Kiwis.
