On President Joe Biden’s invitation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left India on Tuesday, June 20, for a five-day6*/trip to the United States. PM Modi is currently on his first state visit to the US since taking office in 2014.
PM Modi stated this before departing for the US: “The visit to the US would be a chance to deepen and diversify our alliance. There are many facets to India-US relations, and engagements across industries are deepening.
Throughout his mandate, PM Modi visited the US regularly, but none of the visits were considered official state visits, which constitute the highest rank in terms of diplomatic protocol.
PM Modi has visited the US frequently since taking office in 2014 and has met with three presidents: Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. As PM Modi begins his first official state visit to the US, here is a look at some of his other journeys there.
2014
After taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled on a working trip at the request of former President Barack Obama. At New York’s Madison Square Garden, PM Modi was greeted with a rousing welcome by tens of thousands of Indian Americans before meeting Barack Obama for official discussions.
2015
At the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York, Prime Minister Modi spoke to the UNGA.
2016
While PM Modi was in the US for his second official business visit in 2016, Obama and PM Modi had three bilateral meetings. Joe Biden, a former vice president, extended the invitation. Additionally, PM Modi delivered his first speech to the US Congress, where he covered a range of subjects, including terrorism, trade, economic ties, and collaboration in the military and security.
2017
PM Modi paid a visit to then-President Donald Trump at the White House during his three-day tour to the US. Furthermore, Trump invited PM Modi to the White House for a historic “working dinner.” PM Modi also spoke to the Indian diaspora at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, Virginia.
2019
During his visit to the US in September 2019, PM Modi spoke to the Indian-American community in Houston at an occasion called “Howdy Modi!” Approximately 50,000 people of Indian heritage from all over the US attended the event, which was hosted in Houston, Texas.
