The Archies Review: Great Attempt, Lowered Expectation

Netflix’s ‘The Archies’ created a huge stir all over the internet, but the grand premiere was inferior. The cast of the Zoya Akhtar movie seemingly promised a wave of newness in Bollywood, but netizens are the best critics. The Bollywood touch to the Indian Riverdale could not justify the childhood nostalgia of the comics.

The story’s plot revolves around these seven friends exploring their lives into romance and love, music, and skates. The story takes off from there, and their lives change with mysterious things happening in the town. Talking about the reactions of the fans and critics, two sides of the fan feud have been trending on all social media portals. On one side, fans call it a likable movie, and another set of fans call it the cringiest thing ever produced.

Talking about the positive aspects of ‘The Archies’, the characters Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, Jughead Jones, Ethel Muggs, and Dilton Doiley portrayed by Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Vedang Raina, Agastya Nanda and Mihir Ahuja were fresh faces on the screen and did justify their characters but comparing it with the Netflix’s Riverdale is not up to the expectation.

The aspect that didn’t work for the audience was the need for more flow to the story. The Bollywood touch given to the movie could not provide a better outcome than expected. The craft of Zoya Akhtar from her Gully Boy, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, etc, was quite commendable, but with ‘The Archies’, it is a massive disaster. Critics have found the movie pretty uninteresting, and ratings are the best way to see their likeness.

The critics appreciated the new faces introduced by Vedang Raina and Mihir Ahuja. In contrast, the Nepo kids were average in the movie. The Anglo-Indian angle was a nice touch, and the cinematography was also good. Still, the entire story failed on the OTT platform.

Giving an honest opinion of ‘The Archies’, the movie was an excellent acceleration to new faces, but most likely, the boys gave their best, whereas the girls were average. The film had now, and then funny instances, and the plot also accelerated, but the ending could have been better.

To give ratings to the movie, The Archies is average, with a decent 3 out of 5 stars.
