Indians have helped Gulf nations on various fronts, Delhi is secured from their pushback

The rigid pushback by Arab Gulf nations to a distressing remark made by the former Bharatiya Janata Party national representative Nupur Sharma during a televised controversy is a misplacement. Hence, throwing light on the India-United Arab Emirates ties. From a trade relation between Indus and Sumerian cultures to workers of spectacular edifices, the two nations have a relevant history of the circulatory movement that has made history. It has kept alive the everlasting, subtle, and vital bilateral relations. And that could be what India harvests after the storm has soothed.

India-UAE Relations history

India-UAE Relations were further disrupted by the first tracking of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a modern trade agreement signed on 18th February 2022, overlapping with the UAE’s Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations. Notably, the celebration paid homage to the immense contributions of UAE’s Indian community, which includes a third of its residents and is its biggest immigrant society. Indians are very well equipped in UAE for staffing in the physical, financial, educational, and health infrastructure as businessmen of white and blue-collar workers, and laborers. This donation was not just to support UAE’s current history but to the century-old custom and nomadic connections that made a cultural Impact, which brought the Indians and the Gulf Arabs to join hands and cooperate evenly today. An effect of this is the thriving business between India and the UAE that stands at a whopping $72.88 billion (2021-22) with CEPA, and these numbers are expected to reach $100 billion soon.

The human-to-human connection has enabled this two-century-old circulatory movement of trading, employment, and recreation between the Gulf littoral Sheikhdoms and the Subcontinent’s west coast. Thus the migratory movement jumped up high when Great Britain registered the fortunes of a series of treaties namely- monetary, fiscal, defense, and external affairs of the then nine Trucial (former treaty) coast sheikhdoms from the year 1892 to 1971. By then the large sub-continent of India was also under the East India Company (Britishers) and was getting ruled under the colonial British empire, which served as a provider for British Indian administration in defense, police, and personnel, being sent out to the region.

The city of dreams, Mumbai is also a trader with the Gulf administrators for about 150 years. Thus, the annual migration is attributed to oil and gas money flooding the Gulf Cooperation Council nations in Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE. In turn, Indians streamed into the Gulf. The prominent Indian names in UAE who took the most out of the 1970s oil flock were communities like- Sindhi, Kutchi, Gujarati, Mangalorean, Malayali, and Muslim. Now the scenario shows how the 3.5 million population of Indians in the UAE (which also constitutes 30 percent of the total population) becomes one of the favored migrants in the territory.
