Naatu Naatu wins Oscar 2023: RRR song creates historic moment for Indian films

Naatu Naatu

The 95th Oscar Awards ceremony held on March 12, witnessed the Indian moment, where the first time song from any Indian film won the Best original song category and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers won Best Documentary Short film list. As first-time Oscar presenter Deepika Padukone, the lights on the Academy podium make her even more shining. The RRR song has created history to become the first song from any Indian feature to win the Best Original Song category. Its catchy tempo and outstanding choreography have attracted an audience around the world. The megahit song track beats the heavyweights like Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

It is the second Indian song to win this distinguished award after Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire won one in  2009 in the same category. The hit track Naatu Naatu mania has been taking over the 95th Academy Awards. At the start of the ceremony, the spectators saw a skit performance when Jimmy Kimmel was displaced by a dancer performing the Naatu Naatu hook step.

Rahul Sipligunj and Kalaa Bairavaa did a live show on-stage and even though Ram Charan and Jr NTR did not shake a leg, dancers took over the Oscar stage and set it on blast. Lauren Gottlieb was one of the dancers. The dancing performance also received a standing ovation from the spectators.

PM Modi praised RRR’s win and Tweeted, “Exceptional! The popularity of ‘Naatu Naatu’ is global. It will be a song that will be remembered for years to come. Congratulations to @mmkeeravaani @boselyricist and the entire team for this prestigious honour. India is elated and proud. #Oscars,”.  “Oscars would have still been a dream for India but for One Man’s vision, courage & conviction SS Rajamouli,” says Actor Chiranjeevi.

Ram Charan reacted to the significant win and said, “Congratulations to everyone on the ‘RRR’ team including our director S.S. Rajamouli, the composer and lyricist of ‘Naatu Naatu’, M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose the vocalists who sang it, Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, our choreographer Prem Rakshith, and the cast who brought this song to life, and to the world.”

Jr. NTR expresses in his statement, “I cannot find the words to express my elation right now. This is not just a win for RRR but for India as a country. I believe this is just the beginning. Showing us how far Indian cinema can go. Congratulations to Keeravaani garu and Chandrabose garu. Of course none of this would have been possible without a master storyteller called Rajamouli and the audiences who showered us with all the love. I would also like to congratulate the team of ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ on their win today bringing another Oscar to India.”

Kaala Bhairava, one of the singers of Naatu Naatu said, “That’s the most beautiful part of the Oscars – people from all over the world coming together, representing their own culture and their own art forms and being appreciated by people from other countries and communities,”. The blockbuster RRR collected several US awards and won the Golden Globes in the Best Original Song category. It also caught Best Song at the 28th edition of the Critics Choice Awards.
