During his questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the Congress-led UPA government, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that he was being pressured by the agency to falsely implicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a purported fake encounter case that had taken place in Gujarat. On Wednesday, Amit Shah gave a speech at the news channel stating that Sohrabuddin Sheikh encountered a lawsuit filed against him during his tenure as the Gujarat home minister. 

He was asked about the allegations made by the opposition that the current government under Narendra Modi is “misusing” central agencies to target them. Shah addressed Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a criminal defamation case by a court in Surat and stated that the court’s verdict resulted in the Congress leader losing membership in the legislature. He further noted that other politicians had faced similar consequences of being convicted and losing their membership.

“I will explain how I have been a victim of agencies being misused. The Congress did not file a corruption case against him. As the minister of Gujarat, I was involved in an encounter, and as a result, the CBI arrested me and filed a case against me,” Shah said at the event. Shah claimed that throughout the interrogation, they instructed him to provide them with Modi’s name. 

He further stated that Veer Savarkar, the only freedom fighter who had been sentenced to two life terms in Andaman prison, when asked about Rahul’s comment on him. Shah said that using such language for a freedom fighter was inappropriate and suggested that Rahul Gandhi should read his grandmother’s speech on Savarkar. He also mentioned that members of Rahul’s own party were advising him to avoid speaking against Savarkar.

In the Karnataka elections, Shah confidently stated that the BJP would surpass the halfway mark in the upcoming Karnataka assembly election 2023 and establish a government with a decisive majority in the state. Shah declared that the BJP would secure an absolute majority in Karnataka and form the government without any alliance. He stated that they would surpass the halfway mark and achieve a record mandate.

On March 29, members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party are organising a protest at the Parliament premises, which coincides with the demonstration led by party leader Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee is planning to hold a two-day dharna in front of the BR Ambedkar statue at Esplanade in Kolkata, protesting against the Centre’s failure to disburse funds to West Bengal.

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of the West Bengal CM, will be speaking at a rally denouncing the Centre’s policies that are perceived as ‘anti-people’ and its unfavourable treatment towards the West Bengal government. The protest, led by TMC MPs, will be held near the Ambedkar statue on the Parliament premises. Party leaders have emphasised that the demonstration is intended to safeguard democracy, federalism, the Constitution and Parliament. 

On March 27, the TMC became part of an opposition strategy meeting led by the Congress and also took part in a protest referred to as ‘black’ in response to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as an MP. 

Prasun Banerjee and Jawhar Sircar from TMC participated in the meeting held at the office of Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. This movie is notable because Mamata Banerjee’s party had earlier stated its intention to maintain equal distance from both the Congress and the BJP.

On the other hand, Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his approval of anyone who took a stand to safeguard democracy, in response to the TMC’s involvement in the protest. The Congress MPs donned black shirts as a symbol of the dissent against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification. 

The demonstrations occurring in Kolkata and Parliament have the objective of bringing notice to the purported mismanagement of funds by the Centre and its treatment of the West Bengal government. The noteworthy aspect of TMC’s involvement in the protest, led by Congress, is that it signifies significant changes in the party’s stance.  This change indicates a readiness to establish partnerships with other opposition parties to contest the Centre’s policies. 

On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI), announced the Polling dates for the southern state of Karnataka. Rajiv Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, addressing a press conference, declared that the Elections for the high stake battle in Karnataka will take place on 10th May, 2023 and the Counting of Votes will take place on 13th May 2023. He further declared that Gazette Notification will be issued on 13th April, 2023 and that the last date of filing the nomination would be 20th April, 2023. Date of Scrutiny would be 21st April, 2023,  and the last date of withdrawal would be 24th April, 2023. The high stake electoral battle for Karnataka would be taking place in a single phase.

Addressing a Presser at around 11:30 am, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar, stated that the 5 year term of the current Karnataka Legislative Assembly will expire on 24th May, 2023. He further added that a whopping 5.21 crore people are eligible to exercise their Right to Vote that includes 2.62 crore Male Voters and 2.59 crore Female Voters. Rajiv Kumar also added that the Model Code of Conduct comes into immediate effect from today. 

The Bommai-led BJP government in the state is facing a tough challenge from the grand old Congress Party. The high stake battle for Karnataka Legislative Assembly is taking new turns everyday with the recent example of BJP government scrapping the 4% Muslim Reservation and increasing it for Vokkaliga and Lingayat by 2% each. Congress led by KPCC president DK Shivakumar has been attacking the BJP government for this move alongside targeting the Bommai Government for corruption charges.

Outlawed gangster Atiq Ahmed and two other culprits were convicted by the court in Prayagraj after they were found guilty in 2006. All of these offenders were sentenced to life imprisonment. They are reportedly found guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case. Not only this, seven other people including Atiq’s brother Khalid Azim, also known as Ashraf have been acquitted in the case. 

As known to many, Ahmed was a former MP and MLA who was charged with more than 100 criminal cases including murder and kidnapping and was then brought to Prayagraj from Gujarat prison. The trail was followed by a 24-hour journey by the Uttar Pradesh police on Monday. 

Reports from outside the court showed today that a long police cavalcade brought the gangster-turned-politician in large vans because the crowds gatherers on either side of the way. Ahmed who was convicted has seen his sentence after thirty days of the controversial murder of Umesh Pal who was a key witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) MLA Raju Pal. 

Umesh Pal was killed on his way out of his car Hyundai Creat SUV in Prayagraj on February 24 this year. Not just this, two policemen who were with him at that time were also killed in the shootout.

CCTV footage has revealed that Umesh Pal and one of his two police bodyguards were getting off the SUV when all of a sudden several gunmen came from the rear end and started shooting at them. Another man was witnessed using crude bombs during an assault that certainly exploded into a cloud of smoke which led to panic and trouble on the road and people were seen running for their vehicles or outside of shops for safety.

The Department of Immigration, Nepal, has issued high alerts to its offices, specifically at the airport to prevent the escape of Amritpal Singh, a radical preacher from Punjab, who could possibly flee to a third nation using Nepal’s land either on his original passport or fake, as per media report. DG Jhalak Ram Adhikari told the media that the Indian Embassy has communicated to his office to look for help to trace and stop Khalistan separatist Amritpal Singh from running away to the third nation.

The Punjab government  has instigated a massive operation to arrest the separatist leader Amritpal, who has been masking since March 18 from Punjab. Indian Mission has provided images of the Punjab fugitive and all details related to him. The embassy has also indicated to Nepali authorities that Amritpal could escape to a third country using forged documents. 

Adhikari further added that all travellers who wanted to go overseas using Nepal’s land would be screened by the airport authorities. So, Amrtipal Singh is also under the surveillance list of the immigration department, he could not flee from Nepal. In the context of this, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu sent a letter to the Department of Immigration requesting them not to allow the separatist mindset leader Amritpal to escape to a third nation.

“They have informed us that he might use forged documents to enter Nepal and try to run off. The possibility also that he may be hiding somewhere here in Nepal as well. None of the official records is sure about the presence of Amrtipal. However, as per the call, we have informed all concerned authorities and departments,” Adhikari said.

On the other hand, Bathinda SSP Gulneet Khurana on Saturday said, “We appeal to the people not to believe and share the fake news of the arrest of Amrtipal Singh that is being broadly disseminated on the social media sphere.”

Earlier, the Punjab Police started an operation against Amritpal Singh and his right-hand man. The crackdown came nearly over three weeks after Amritpal’s followers had skirmishes with Police personnel at Annala Police Station on February 23, on the outpost of Amritsar, a point of contention to demand the release of one of his right-hand allies Lovepreet Toofan. 

On Monday, General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff emphasised that China’s incursions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remain a possible catalyst for the escalation, and he reiterated the Indian Army’s unwavering determination in handling the PLA Army. “We are well-prepared to handle any unexpected situation with our ample reserves. Our troops are maintaining a high level of readiness and responding to the PLA with firmness, determination, and caution while safeguarding the integrity of our territorial claims,” he said. 

According to his explanation, disagreement and dispute assertions about the territory persist in certain areas because of varying interpretations of the demarcation of the LAC. During the Second Strategic Dialogue on the impact of China’s rise on the global stage, hosted by the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), the army chief spoke to a gathering of defence intellectual and research experts. 

The chief of the military commented on the Sino-American rivalry, saying that China’s growth is motivated by its desire for a larger and more prominent role in the international arena. China’s goal of replacing the United States as the main provider of global security is evident in its efforts to broker peace talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran, as well as its proposal of a 12-point peace plan to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. 

During his speech, the army chief emphasised the Russia-Ukraine conflict has further contributed to the instability of geopolitical security situations, bringing various aspects to the forefront. He stated that this conflict has reinforced the significance of hard power and the importance of land in determining the outcome of the conflict. He also stressed the need to be prepared for a prolonged struggle. 

The Army chief stated that there are existing engagement mechanisms at political, diplomatic, and military levels, which are being effectively utilised to maintain stability along LAC. The ongoing talks are being carried out through this established mechanism.

On Monday, the BJP alleged that the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal has transformed into a “private limited company” and that the state’s condition under its administration is even worse than that of a “jungle raj”. The party criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government for its handling of problems such as unemployment and the absence of progress. The TMC has released information regarding two-day protests in the state on March 29 to 30. 

The BJP’s leader in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, criticized the TMC’s decision to organize demonstrations on March 30, which coincides with the celebration of Ram Navami. Adhikari asserted that followers of “Sanatan culture” will observe Lord Ram’s birth anniversary rather than participate in the protests. He accused her of announcing protests based on “fabricated and false” claims instead of declaring a holiday on the day.

During a press conference, Adhikari provided a further explanation regarding his purported appeal for all TMC adversaries, including the Left in the state, to unite against Banerjee. He stated that it is essential for everyone to openly declare their intention to cast their vote before considering any such alliance.  He stated that with the Congress and the Left losing relevance, the BJP will be the clear option for the public. According to him, the only solution is to have a double-engine government.

The funds were intended for one crore job cards.

He stated that this constitutes a major fraud and has taken legal action to request a CBI investigation. Adhikari accused the TMC of poor governance and highlighted that since it came to power in 2011, the state’s loan outstanding has increased from Rs 2 lakh crore to Rs 6 lakh crore. Additionally, the number of registered educated unemployed individuals has doubled from almost 1 crore, while the number of migrant labourers has increased nine-fold to over 45 lakh.
