Scientists in Assam have developed a novel-free space optical communication system for information transfer. 

The research team has demonstrated the distortion-free transmission of text messages and images over distance of one kilometre even in the presence of turbulence such as during a stormy weather. The communication system can thus be used for high speed and secured communication between two individuals located either inside a building or outside.

A research team led by Indian Institute of Technology (Guwahati) faculty, Dr. Bosanta Ranjan Boruah, Department of Physics, and Dr. Santanu Konwar, presently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, Abhayapuri College, Assam, has developed a novel free-space optical communication system for information transfer.  In free-space communication, data in the form of voice, text or image is transmitted using light wirelessly rather than through optical fibres and it represents the next generation of communications technology. 

The results of this research has recently been published in “Communications Physics (https://www.nature.com/articles/s42005-020-00468-1)” a highly reputed journal belonging to Nature Publishing Group.

The past couple of decades have seen phenomenal developments in free-space communication. Most free-space communication systems developed so far all over the world use a type of light beam called the vortex beam to encode the data. The problem in the use of vortex beam is that it can be distorted by turbulence that may occur in the medium of propagation. In effect, data transmitted wirelessly using light/laser beams, can become corrupted when transmitted through atmospheric turbulence such as wind. To overcome this problem, the IIT Guwahati researchers have, for the first time, used orthogonal spatial light modes called Zernike modes to encode the data and to transmit the same robustly in the form of the phase profile of a laser beam.  

Explaining the technicality of the research, Dr. Bosanta Ranjan Boruah, says: “In our work, the transmission station modulates the phase profile of a laser beam that carries the data, in terms of the strengths of a few Zernike modes. In the process we also enhance the information content per modulation cycle of the laser beam.”  

At the point of reception, the laser beam with encoded user information is sensed by a specially designed wavefront sensor that decodes the user information. In this communication system, a unique mechanism has been implemented that can compensate for the effect of atmospheric turbulence, so that the user information can be transmitted even through turbulent atmosphere resulting in negligible error at the receiving station. 

“In addition to eliminating errors in communication, our system is also insulated from hacking and interloping, because the receiver decodes the transmitted beam by measuring the phase and not the power of the light beam, with prior knowledge about the strength and types of Zernike modes used, which make it more secure than wired and other conventional wireless forms of communication”, says Dr. Santanu Konwar.  Further, the transmission is directed strictly towards the receiver, unlike other wireless forms of communication in which the information is transmitted in all directions, adding to the security of the communication.  

A unique all Women Biking Adventure was launched in Madhya Pradesh to promote tourism in the state and inspire women to explore new places through solo travelling. A fleet of 15 bikers from across the country kick started this unique journey from Bhopal on the November 19, covering national parks, namely Satpura National Park, Kanha National Park and the Bandhavgarh National Park, along with a plethora of places, each offering a glimpse into the natural and cultural diversity that Madhya Pradesh offers. The riders got to indulge in a plethora of adventurous activities, including boat and jeep safaris, night safaris at the parks.  

The all women bike trip covered approximately 1500 km in span of six days and sent a powerful and welcoming message to all who love to explore new places. Apart from re-fueling the passion for solo travelling and bike riding amongst young and old alike, they gave the message that a road can be a destination too, it’s all about the perspective. The woman riders visited rural communities and got a chance to interact with them via village walks, delightful folk performances, ancient temple visits and more. The itinerary also included a visit to the Pachdhar Pottery Village in Pench, a native community of potters that have been carrying masterpieces for generations now. The trip also included a trip to Pardhi where they would interacted with the tribal women and went for the famous Pardhi Walk. The journey ended in Bhopal after a morning at the KhajurahoTemples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fleet was accompanied by tourism experts, medical assistants and mechanics to ensure safety at every step.

“This initiative is not only about promoting State tourism, but we aim to inspire women and solo travellers to visit the land that offers different facets of India at every turn. Partnering with the expert agency, in this initiative, we welcome travellers from all over the world to visit the heart of Incredible India and experience the diverse experiences Madhya Pradesh has to offer,” said Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Managing Director, MP Tourism Board.

“We not only wanted these 15 woman riders to explore Madhya Pradesh, but also experience the rural and tribal culture of the state. New Delhi: The CEO of Serum Institute of India, Adar Poonawala said on Thursday that the oxford coronavirus vaccine is likely to be available for the general public in India by April 2021 Elderly people and healthcare workers will be getting it far early by Feb 2021. 

“It will probably take two or three years for every Indian to get inoculated, not just because of the supply constraints but because you need the budget, the vaccine, logistics, infrastructure, and then, people should be willing to take the vaccine. So these are the factors that lead up to being able to vaccinate 80-90 per cent of the population. It will be 2024 for everybody, if willing to take a two-dose vaccine, to be vaccinated,” Mr Poonawalla said at a summit.

Speaking of pricing, he said it will be available for an MRP of Rs. 1000 for 2 doses.

“The government of India will be getting it at a far cheaper price at around USD 3-4 because it will be buying in a large volume and get access to the price that is similar to what COVAX has got. We are still pricing it far cheaper and more affordable than other vaccines we have in the market today,” Mr Poonawalla said.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is proving very effective for elderly people.

When asked about the effectiveness of the vaccine- “It has induced a good T-cell response, which is an indicator for your long-term immunity and antibody response but then again, time will only tell if these vaccines are going to protect you in the long term.
