7 Billion Year Old Stardust Is Oldest Material Discovered on Earth

The India Saga Saga |

Scientists have discovered the oldest firm material on Earth – stardust supposed to have created about 7 billion years ago. The meteorite pieces came down in September 1969 in the town of Murchison, in Australia’s Victoria state. Stardust is a matter that develops as small particles in space when stars depart. These scraps can be used later to create new planetary bodies, including stars, planets, and moons. Scientists said the stardust particles “became trapped in meteorites, where they remained unchanged for billions of years.” This makes the samples “time capsules” of events that occurred before the solar system.

How Cells in the Human Body Learn to Count

The India Saga Saga |

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have given us a count of around 37.2 trillion cells in the human body. Researchers experimented on genetically engineered mice and revealed that the cilia count is managed by a process observed in non-mammalian species. What makes these cells exceptional is that while other cells create 1 cilium per cell, these advanced cells go about building hundreds of cilia. Researchers believe revealing the mechanisms or causes governing the cilia number, can shed light on the treatment of respiratory disease, infertility, hydrocephaly.

Scientists discovered An Unbelievable Partner To Save Coral Reefs

The India Saga Saga |

A new study indicates that sound recordings that lure in fish could be important for recovering reefs attacked by supercharged storms and heatwaves. Tim Gordon, a marine biologist at the University of Exeter used underwater loudspeakers to mimic the sounds of thriving reefs to fool the fish into returning. With the help of this novel experiment, Tim hopes to bring dying reefs back to life. He hopes that his experiment will help to attract young fish to the desolate landscape, where they will make new homes and start to rebuild the bank.

Bambai Lifestyle a success story of Akshat Gada and his numerous trials which never gave up

The India Saga Saga |

Stories are relatable when it explains the efforts and complete truth. It connects better and explains how a person started, what he struggled through, and finally, what exactly the results were derived. It is like a pattern that comes to a successful end when it starts with motivation and enthusiasm to do something better. No doubt, the efforts of Akshat Gada can be connected to a series of events which are explained by his life’s journey that began from Dombivali. As of today, at the age of 19, he has gained titles of Digital Marketeer, Co-owner, Co-founder, and CEO of  Bambai Lifestyle, launched on 1st December 2019, which has shown a successful growth in just six months and earns monthly income in 5 figures. Not just this, Akshat has also conducted a successful event at the Somaiya college, Bigwig carnival, where many students got a chance to represent their business skills, and their products got marketed by Akshat and his team.

“Step by Step it takes a run and we, we did make our progress, slow and steady, but definitely towards the many successful months, we saw before the pandemic had a little effect on the business. We are sure, our customers who trust us for our quality will maintain their faith and will co-operate as we get back after the lockdown, after all, we are not just a brand, we are the name they trust, and we continue to serve on it, at our best,” says Akshat as he was asked upon how the pandemic situation affected his business. His words have a strength of his ideas, and he knows how to move ahead over the same. Since the start, he has been living through the struggle of managing the business alone, but then with the right time and perfect support of few close friends, the trend, the path, and the idea started working towards the success pattern.

Akshat was interested in business since the year 2016. He loved how his dad made efforts to continue and work for his business, which was associated with the readymade garments. But efforts increase with the struggle, and this is where the idea to help his dad clicked this young mind, which didn’t stop over the same but watched videos, read articles and blogs over the internet, and assured himself of receiving as much knowledge as possible. Well, “A mind which can start thinking can never stop doing from what it always wants,” and neither did Akshat. He used Instagram to make his first start. Received orders, but that didn’t seem to be efficient, and this made him stop but never give up. He started again and again and finally landed up with the  Bambai Lifestyle, the start of which was made with a very little amount but trustworthy friends, Parth Trivedi, Parth Modi, Mayank Chaudhary, Rajat Pandey, Jinal Jain and Himani Jain, who ensure their best in this business.

It is never easy to convince someone, and especially when it comes to gaining the trust of parents. Neither was in this case. They had to explain and request a lot to get that one “Yes,” which became the reason for their success further. Akshat says, “I had the experience. It was not just from Instagram but also from my trials made through the application named Udaan, where I became the reseller and tried to ensure my growth. It was effective, but I had a feeling of dissatisfaction within, and this is what convinced me and motivated me to get serious altogether from a chilling mood, for finding a domain name and creating a website which we called the Bambai Lifestyle, a place where all can have their own style, as per their wants.”

But sometimes, just sometimes, we face an inconsistency, and this is where we give up. We do not consider getting up and running back, but Akshat and his dreams made him do all that he always wanted to. From trying to create a sale to trying hard for designing and creating his own brand name, he never had a series of words that could say, “I do not want to go further.” He stayed calm, and this is what makes his story to be more exciting, encouraging, and a passionate one. His business @Bambai Lifestyle also started selling quality cases and covers along with the sale of good quality clothes at a low price and touched the success. He knew he and his team would never give up, and this trust is what made him go and grow, motivating and influencing the lives of ones around.

Five tips on how to live with novel coronavirus

The India Saga Saga |

After seventy days of lockdown, the unlock 1.0 is put into action. Officially designated lockdown 5.0, from June 1, 2020, the economy and ordinary life are returning to normalcy in a controlled and phased manner. This is the beginning of a new normal. It is going to be a long haul. Experts and officials are suggesting that ‘we must learn to live with the virus’. With vaccines still months away, we need to live in a new normal. Speaking to India Science Wire, Prof. K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, gave five tips to ‘living with the virus’.

“Either we must change the virus, or we must change ourselves; changing the virus is going to take time,” says Prof. Vijay Raghavan. Research and development of drugs and vaccine are underway, but for them to be available for broader use, after proper clinical trials, is going to take time. Producing the drugs and vaccine for everyone is also time-consuming. Meanwhile, we can change ourselves to face the pandemic.

Here are the five tips from Prof. Raghavan:

1. Wear a mask when you step out of the houses

Recent studies have found that when a person speaks, about 1000 tiny droplets of saliva comes out. If that person happens to be infected with novel coronavirus, then each of these droplets will carry thousands of germs. Large droplets will fall off the ground, usually within one-metre distance. However, the plum of tiny droplets can float in the air for a longer time, mainly if the area is not well ventilated. Many people who are infected by the virus do not show any symptoms. Therefore, they may not even be aware that they are affected. Wearing a mask protects not only us but others as well, if we are infected. “We have prepared a handbook on manufacturing homemade mask, which one can use to make their own face cover,” says Prof. Raghavan.

2. Practice vigilant hand hygiene

An analysis of  75,465 COVID-19 cases in China by a WHO-led study shows that novel coronavirus is primarily transmitted between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes. Thus, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted when one comes into direct contact with infected people. Or when we touch surfaces in the immediate environment or objects used by the infected person (e.g., door handle and washroom tap). Our normal urge is to reach our face. When we wash our hands thoroughly with soap for at least thirty seconds, the virus, if any, on our hands is destroyed. “There are suggestions that the virus may also be transmitted by faecal and oral routes. Hence it is better to wash the hands and legs,” says Prof. Raghavan.

3. Maintain social distance

Most likely, the infection happens through direct contact or inhaling the droplets shed by an infected person. Droplets in usual conditions travel about a metre from the infected person.  Keeping a distance of one metre from one another in markets, offices, and public transport would greatly help. “Young people can get infected without showing symptoms, and they can infect the elderly. Hence, we need to take special care to maintain physical distancing, particularly with the vulnerable like elderly, those who are ill in multiple ways,” says Prof. Raghavan.

4. Test and tracking

“If someone turns out to be COVID-19 positive, then one has to go back in time and identify proximal contacts of that person and identify them. We must test them,” says Prof. Raghavan. Only an infected person can transmit the virus to others or contaminate a surface and spread the virus. If most of the infected persons are identified, then controlling the transmission of the virus becomes easy.

5. Isolation

“The people who have been identified as positive cases should be isolated,” says Prof. Raghavan. Once isolated, the infected person can receive proper medical attention. Further, as they remain isolated, an infected person cannot spread the virus to others. The tentacles of the infection can be cut.

Â“If one can do this with high speed the last one and follow all the others, then we can have a semblance of a normal life while we wait to do something for drugs and vaccine. If we don’t do any of these things and if we slip up on any one of these, then we will have a problem,” said Prof. Raghavan.

He also pointed out that the conditions are different in India as compared to those in western countries. Physical distancing becomes difficult as many people live in a densely populated area like Dharavi in Mumbai. Further, in India, most households have three generations living together. “This may make the implementation of physical distancing difficult. So, we need to have some innovative solutions to deal with these specific problems,” says Prof. K Vijay Raghavan.

“There are multiple levels of responsibility to decide what to do. Most important of all are communication and putting the message in that communication into action by all of us” Prof K Vijay Raghavan said.

The office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India has developed guidelines for hygiene and sanitation in densely populated areas and a manual on homemade protective covers for face and mouth. These are available for free download in many Indian languages in the website http://psa.gov.in/information-related-covid-19. (India Science Wire)

India Unlocked: Current Phase of Re-Opening, Will Have An Economic Focus; Details Inside

The India Saga Saga |

Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued new guidelines to fight COVID-19 and for phased re-opening of areas outside the Containment Zones, today.  The guidelines would come into effect from June 1, 2020 and would be effective till June 30, 2020.  The current phase of re-opening, Unlock 1, will have an economic focus. The new guidelines have been issued based on extensive consultations held with States and UTs.

A strict lockdown was imposed throughout the country since March 24, 2020.  All activities were prohibited except essential activities. Subsequently, in a graded manner and keeping the overarching objective of containing the spread of COVID-19 in view, the lockdown measures have been relaxed.

Salient features of the new guidelines

Lockdown measures would continue to be implemented strictly in the containment zones. These will be demarcated by the State/ UT Governments, after taking into consideration the guidelines issued by the Health Ministry. Within the containment zones, strict perimeter control shall be maintained and only essential activities allowed.

All activities that were prohibited earlier would be opened up in areas outside Containment Zones in a phased manner, with the stipulation of following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to be prescribed by the Health Ministry:

Phase I (permitted to open from June 8, 2020)

  • Religious places and places of worship for public;
  • Hotels, restaurants and other hospitality services; and
  • Shopping malls.

Health Ministry would issue SOPs for the above activities, in consultation with the Central Ministries/ Departments concerned and other stakeholders, for ensuring social distancing and to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Phase II

Schools, colleges, educational/ training/ coaching institutions etc., will be opened after consultations with States and UTs.  State Governments/ UT administrations are being advised to hold consultations at the institution level with parents and other stakeholders.  Based on the feedback, a decision on the re-opening of these institutions will be taken in the month of July, 2020.  MoHFW will prepare SOP for these institutions.

Limited number of activities to remain prohibited throughout the country

  • International air travel of passengers;
  • Operation of Metro Rail;
  • Cinema halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars and auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places; and,
  • Social/ political/ sports/ entertainment/ academic/ cultural/ religious functions/ and other large congregations.
  • Dates for the opening of above activities would be decided in Phase III, based on assessment of the situation.

Unrestricted Movement of Persons and Goods

  • No restriction on inter-State and intra-State movement of persons and goods.  No separate permission/ approval/ e-permit would be required for such movements.
  • However, if a State/ UT, based on reasons of public health and its assessment of the situation, proposes to regulate movement of persons, it would give wide publicity in advance regarding the restrictions to be placed on such movement, and the related procedures to be followed.

Night curfew would continue to remain in force, on the movement of individuals, for all non-essential activities.  However, the revised timings of the curfew will be from 9 pm to 5 am.

National Directives for COVID-19 management would continue to be followed throughout the country, with a view to ensure social distancing.

States to decide on activities outside Containment Zones

States and UTs, based on their assessment of the situation, may prohibit certain activities outside the Containment zones or impose such restrictions, as deemed necessary.

Protection for vulnerable persons

Vulnerable persons, i.e., persons above 65 years of age, persons with co-morbidities, pregnant women, and children below the age of 10 years, are advised to stay at home, except for meeting essential requirements and for health purposes.

Use of Aarogya Setu

The Aarogya Setu mobile application is a powerful tool built by Government of India to facilitate quick identification of persons infected by COVID-19, or at risk of being infected, thus acting as a shield for individuals and the community.  With a view to ensure safety, various authorities are advised to encourage the use of the application.
