Luke Bakhuizen Raises Awareness about Plastic Pollution, Partners with Icebreaker

Luke Bakhuizen, the social media influencer, and environmentalist, has started working with clothing label Icebreaker about raising awareness around an unlikely suspect of pollution – plastic microfibers in the ocean. 

Over 35% of the projected 1.5 million metric tonnes of microplastics found in the oceans come from synthetic textiles. What’s even more concerning is that the plastic microfibres shed from clothing are so small that they can’t be seen by the naked eye and as such marine life are ingesting them. 

Natural fibres are more renewable, more sustainable and a better alternative to synthetic, they release far less synthetic microfibres when washed. Washing clothing can release up to 700,000 synthetic microfibres per full load and are polluting our waterways. The more we discover the levels of plastic pollution on our planet, the greater the need to learn more and to raise awareness of the problem.

In this journey, Luke Bakhuizen challenged his Instagram audience to follow his footsteps and wear the same t-shirt for seven days with zero washes with the hashtag #7dayteechallenge. New Zealand brand, icebreaker, believes nature provides the answers and for over 24 years has been developing natural fibre-based clothing. Natural fibres are more renewable, more sustainable and a better alternative to synthetic, they release far less synthetic microfibres when washed and are naturally odour repellent. 

Further to this, Luke offered several tips to the people on how they can reduce the consumption of plastic and save this planet and oceans. Some of the tips include:

  • Recycle plastic
  • Join beach clean-up missions
  • Support the organizations that aim at reducing plastic pollution
  • Use re-usable cups, water bottles, etc.
  • Wash less, wear more clothing
  • Purchase clothing with natural fibres
