On April 26th, 2023, Wednesday, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will host the Quad Leaders’ Summit on May 24th in Sydney. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India will be travelling to Australia in May to participate in the Quad Leaders’ Summit. The Summit will include the leaders of India, Australia, the United States, and Japan. This is the first time that Australia is hosting a Quad Leaders’ Summit in Sydney. 

“I am honoured to declare that for the first time Australia will be hosting the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Sydney on May 24,” tweeted the PM, Anthony Albanese. The declaration of this Quad summit  was made during the combined press conference hosted by PM Narendra Modi along with the counterpart of Australia in March when the latter was on a four-day visit to India. “ “The members of Quad include both countries Australia as well as India. I thanked PM Albanese for inviting me to Australia for the Summit of Quad Leaders in May. Earlier in September, India has also invited him for the G20 Summit,” said PM Modi.   

The Summit of Quad Leaders devoted towards the contribution of a steady as well as successful Indo-Pacific that guaranteed the development, security and growth for all. The leaders of Quad Group will be meeting in Australia on May 24, while earlier they have also met on four occasions. The importance of the group in the region has expanded due to its sharp interest in sustainable and inclusive growth of the economy and also encouraging connections between Quad members as well as Non-Quad members. 

The leaders of different countries participating in the Quad Summit, will have a conversation on how the Quad can work with the partners and regional groupings, also including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Pacific Islands Forum, to strengthen the cooperation as well as shape the region. The Quad is a strategic forum consisting of India, Japan, Australia, and the US. The primary purpose of Quad is to create new strategies to keep the sea routes in the Indo-Pacific region. 

On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) party office in Chandigarh with the intent to pay his last tribute to Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal. The politician took his last breath at the age of 95 after being admitted to a hospital in Mohali a week back. 

PM Modi took to Twitter to express his condolences. He said, “The demise of Parkash Singh Badal is nothing less than a personal loss for me. I have closely interacted with him for many decades and gained so much knowledge from him.” He recalled a number of meetings with Prakash Singh Badal ‘in which his wisdom was always seen,’ He referred to Badal as a ‘remarkable statesman who contributed greatly to the nation and worked tirelessly for Punjab’s progress.”

As a gesture of respect for the veteran politician, the Centre has declared a two-day mourning across India. According to a government statement, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all the buildings where it is normally flown, and there will be no official entertainment on these two days. The five-time chief minister gained the light in the political world after working as a village sarpanch and then in the year 1957 he contested in the assembly elections for the first time.

It was only recently when Badal’s party broke ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) due to the farmer’s protest in the year 2020. He returned his Padma Vibhushan award- the second highest civilian honour in the country as well in order to protest against the government’s mistreatment of farmers. 

The veteran political leader complained of difficulty in breathing and was thus taken to Fortis Hospital in Mohali a week ago. Fortis Hospital Mohali said in a statement that S Parkash Singh Badal left us due to his illness even though he had received proper medication. They further added that the death of S Parkash Singh Badal is deeply mourned. 

On April 26th, 2023, Wednesday, The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elected a new mayor and a deputy mayor. The Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Shelly Oberoi was unanimously elected as the Mayor of MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) for the second consecutive term as her rival, a BJP candidate Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination. The elections were held at the time when the Civic body was yet to choose the powerful Standing Committee, which plays an important role in the local government.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Shelly Oberoi was pitted in today’s election against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor Shikha Rai from Greater Kailash. On the other hand, incumbent deputy mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also got another term as deputy mayor after BJP candidate Soni Patel withdrew her nomination. AAP’s Shelly Oberoi was elected as the MCD Mayor in the fourth attempt after much ruckus between the BJP and AAP, earlier in the year.

Being the ruling party in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the win comes as a big relief for the AAP. The last three attempts to elect the Mayor failed due to the political bickering between the AAP and the BJP. They met for the first time on 6th January, after that on 24th January, and last on 6th February. In the history of MCD elections, only eight mayors have served for more than a year, and now AAP’s Shelly Oberoi will be the ninth such mayor. 

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal took to his Twitter, “Congratulations Shelly and Aley on again becoming Mayor and Deputy Mayor, this time unopposed. Best wishes to both of them, people have huge expectations from us. We have to work really hard to meet the expectations.” The post of mayor in the national capital sees five single-term elections on a rotational basis with the first year reserved for women, for the open category the second year is reserved, and the reserved category got third year. At the end of the annual year, the city gets its new mayor. 

On April 26th, 2023, Wednesday, The closing ceremony of Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam will be addressed by the Prime Minister of India at 10:30 am via video conferencing. The relationship between the Saurashtra region in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu is ancient and a strong one. May this Sangamam uplift the cultural linkages and the soul of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” tweeted by the official handle of PM of India.

According to a report by the Global Times, Li Shangfu, China’s Defence Minister will make his maiden visit to India to attend SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) meeting of Defence Ministers to be held from 27th to 28th April in the National Capital, on April 25th, 2023, Tuesday. It has been said that following the Galwan Valley clashes that took place in the year 2020, this will be the first time that the Chinese Defence Minister will visit India to be a part of the SCO Defence Ministers  Meeting. 

According to Global Times, the Defence Ministry of China said that from 27th to 28th April (Thursday to Friday), the Defence Minister of China will take part in the SCO meetings, and will address the gatherings as well as meet the head of the delegations from other countries. “Defence Minister and Chinese State Councillor Li Shangfu will attend the defence ministers’ meeting among the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) from 27th to 28th April in India,” said in a Tweet by the Global Times.  

A report by CNN mentioned that the US-sanctioned general, Li Shangfu was named as China’s new Defence Minister a month ago. Li Sangfu has been under US Sanctioned since 2018, and his appointment to the position of Defence Minister comes at a time of highly strained relations between Washington and Beijling. The National People’s Congress replaced outgoing defence chief, Wei Fenghe, as he was voted in by the country’s rubber-stamp parliament. Russia, China, India, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and India are among the SCO member countries. 

An encounter was also witnessed in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, when the Chinese troops tried to aggressively change the status quo on LAC in the eastern area of Ladakh. Since the past few years, it has been observed that India and China have issues as well as a long history of border transgressions while the most recent one was witnessed in the year 2022 in Arunachal Pradesh. It has been observed that almost 20 soldiers of India died in the Galwan Valley clash which was fought in hand-to-hand combat in zero temperatures around 15 June and 16 June 2020. On April 25th, 2023, Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation India’s first Water Metro during his two-day visit to Kerala.
