On Monday, Avani Lekhara earned India’s first Paralympic shooting medal in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 category. Lekhara earned the gold medal in the final with a total score of 249.6, which tied the world record. India has now won four medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

The 19-year-old also made history by being the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. After swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016), and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan, she is the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympic gold (2016).

With a total score of 621.7 in the qualification round, she qualified for the final. Avani made a strong comeback after a difficult start to reach the showcase event’s finals. She scored 104.9, 104.8, and 104.1 on her third and fourth attempts to qualify for the game, respectively, before scoring 104.1 in the final round of qualification. The Indian shooter will now compete in the showcase event’s finals.

Shooters in the SH1 Rifle category can hold a gun in their hands. Athletes with limb impairments, such as amputations or paraplegia, compete. Some competitors will participate while seated, while others will compete while standing.

Seeing the changing aspects of Afghanistan, the Defence Ministry of India considers to form Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs) as a quick decision-making aspect during wartime. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated the above mentioned concern while addressing the Defence Services and Staff College at nearby Wellington on Sunday. 

“The changing equation in Afghanistan is a challenge for us…These situations have forced our country to rethink its strategy. We are changing our strategy and the formation of Quad underlines this strategy,” he said.

On IBGs, the Minister said these groups would not only facilitate faster decision-making but also increase the number of integrated fighting units.

Without naming Pakistan, Singh said, “After losing two wars, one of our neighboring countries has started resorting to proxy war, and terrorism has become an integral part of its state policy.”

A unilateral attempt was made last year to change the status quo on the border. “There too, we faced our adversary with a new dynamism,” Singh said.

“If the ceasefire (between India and Pakistan) succeeds today, it is because of our strength. The cross-border attacks in 2016 changed our reactionary mindset to a proactive mindset, which was declared in 2019. It was further strengthened by the Balakot airstrike,” he added.

“Ever since our country became independent it has been the endeavor of enemy forces to create an atmosphere of instability within the country through one or the other means. Taking the history of the last 75 years, it seems that we have inherited the challenges,” he added.

New Delhi: Mahindra Defence Systems Limited (MDS) had bagged a contract worth ?1,349.95 crore for manufacturing of Integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare Defence Suite (IADS) for modern warships of Indian Navy. Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. revealed the same to public on Friday.

“IADS is a high-end underwater equipment that uses the latest technology. It is designed to detect and protect warships from underwater threats. It is a versatile system capable of operations from all sizes of warships – small, medium, and large. The complex array of sensors in water undertakes surveillance, and provides inputs for signal processing and analysis, to enable necessary action,” Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd said in a statement.

It further stated that MDS won the bid which was through an open tender put out by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with the systems fielded through exhaustive and detailed trials at sea to prove their capability. Mahindra Defence will now be supplying 14 IADS systems for the Indian Navy warships. 

Expressing his views on the occasion, Mahindra Defence Systems Ltd Chairman SP Shukla said that the contract was the “first major contract with the private sector meant for underwater detection and protection from threats. This contract once again epitomises the success of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.”

“The contract with an Indian firm under the ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’ category of defence procurement is an important boost to India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission and provides a major fillip to indigenous defence industry in technology development and production. The system will enhance anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy,” the Ministry further said.
