Forest clearance was given to the contentious Goa railway project in the Western Ghats

The India Saga Saga |

Under the Forest Conservation Act, the Union Ministry of Climate, Forest and Environmental change has granted the approval of nearly 140 hectares of protected Western Ghats Forest land.  The permission has been granted for contentious double tracking of the railway line between the Castlerock Railway Station and the Margao Railway station in South Goa. The state is to lose 50,000 trees for the task. In a communication with the forest secretary, the MoEF has informed that the consent is being granted based on Goa’s request subject to certain conditions.

The letter of consent was issued on January 27 by Deputy Inspector General of forests M K Shambhu after the regional empowered committee ‘carefully examined’ the proposal and decided to grant an in-principle stage-I approval. The diversion of the forest land subject to conditions including transferring of money equal to the net present value of the forest land being diverted to the CAMPA funds for raising, maintaining the compensatory afforestation for the degraded forest land.

Curiously, despite the trees being felled in Goa on the windward side of the Western Ghats, the compensatory afforestation for these projects is being done in Sutagatti, Iddalahonda, Ramadurg, Kakati, Suldal, and Shigeholi villages of Gokak and Karkati taluks in Karnataka.

The doubling of the railway line along the existing alignment is being opposed in Goa by some. The line will cut across the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park – the two are Goa’s oldest wildlife sanctuaries fearing that besides ecological damage, new construction will destabilize the vulnerable slopes of the Western Ghats mountain range and lead to landslides and other unforeseen consequences.

In 2010, the Ministry of Railways sanctioned the doubling of the existing 342 kilometers long Hospet-Tinai ghat-Vasco railway line in the states of Karnataka and Goa. The first phase between Hospet and Tinai ghat involved easier terrain atop that has already been completed. It’s the second phase between Tinai ghat and Vasco da Gama that involves crossing the steep slopes, raging rivers and the thick forest of the Western Ghats as well as densely populated areas of coastal Goa.

The railways have said there is no alternative to locating the project in forest land as the alignment invariably has to pass through the protected area. The authorities also announced mitigation measures in the form of four underpasses to allow for wildlife crossing for the railway project and an elevated viaduct at 13 locations for the highway. The railways have also claimed that it is not being done solely to transport coal but for the general ‘development’ of the region.

Prashant Kumar Mishra, the additional general manager of South Western Railways which is tasked with the project, had said last year, “It has been misconstrued that the railway line double-tracking is being done solely for the purpose of coal transport. Across the world, the focus is increasingly on non-conventional sources of energy.”

“In the year 2015-16 the South Western Railway carried 12 million metric tons of coal (per year) while in the year 2019-20 we have carried 9 metric tons of coal which is a reduction of 25%.”

Despite the clearances, the project is likely to encounter further legal hurdles on account of the staunch opposition before work begins.

He soon started to support all the unprivileged athletes by providing them with opportunities at a lot of sports events, giving them correct details and information about the type of sport that they were interested in, providing them with motivation an a lot of support that they did not receive from anywhere else. This helped to boost the young students is efforts and they soon began to win big awards, ranks, and respect too. In the present times, we hardly find people like him who are willing to help out students and support them in dire times of need. Bharat Bandh: Nationwide shutdown against fuel hike and GST

The India Saga Saga |

New Delhi: On Friday, a nationwide shutdown has been called by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) over rising fuel prices, the Goods and Services Tax and the new e-Way bill- A permit associated with the movement of goods.

Since then the protestors have claimed that around 40,000 trade associations will extend their support to the shutdown. The demonstration is expected to take place across 1,500 towns and cities. The All India Transporters Welfare Association, the top body of India’s road transport sector will also join the protest and hold road blockades across the country.

Farmers’ Unions, which have been protesting for months against the three farm laws, have also expressed solidarity.

CAIT said in a tweet last night, demanding simplification of the tax, “Harassed by the complicated GST rules, eight crore traders and 1 lakh transporters will join Bharat Bandh today as a mark of protest against distorted GST.”
“The tax is neither ‘good’ nor ‘simple’,” it said in another post on Twitter.

Commercial markets are expected to stay shut as the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation, the representative body of 4 lakh distributors has also joined hands in the shutdown.

AITWA, the Transporters body has demanded scrapping of “regressive” e-way rules, which says the “mandates impractical compliance from transporters”.

Mahendra Arya, National President AITWA, in a statement, “The consignor or sender of goods have to fill their goods details on an online portal, in part A and the transporter have to update the vehicle no in part B. Transporters have to cover the total journey @ 200 km/day, from consignor place to consignee place as per pin code calculated at shortest distance. This is practically not possible due to many factors such as Sunday/holiday ,accident, part load consolidation, hub and spoke, congestion en-route or at unloading place, driver personal issue and many others.”

Stressing that the transporters are “being made scapegoats by tax officials”, the AITWA has further said: “Any error or expiry of e way bill due to any mistake whatsoever is heavily and obnoxiously penalised to 200 percent of the tax value, or 100 percent of the invoice value under Section 129 of CGST Act, 2017 even when there is no tax loss to Government.”

“Transporters will stop all their operation and will park their vehicles as a symbolic protest. All customers will be approached by transport companies not to book or load any goods on February 26th, 2021,” said Last week, CAIT’s secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said “almost 950 amendments have been made so far to GST rules in the past four years and issues related to glitches in the GST portal and the continuous increase in compliance burden are the major lacunae in the tax regime”.

Amid rising fuel prices, the government is already being targeted by the opposition parties. This is the first nationwide shutdown over the same issue.

Hybrid learning: Switch to technological mode to reframe Indian Education System Dr Hariswami Das

The India Saga Saga |

India holds an imperative place in the worldwide education industry and we have one of the biggest advanced education frameworks on the planet with more than 1.5 million schools, 751 Universities, and 35, 539 colleges.

While we all understand how crucial education is to shape our lives, it has also been a major problem in our country. There are several issues that the Indian education system is grappled with. Though the Indian Government and other institutions have been working to reform the existing education models there are still several issues that are required to be taken care of.

Those days are gone where classrooms were only poky within textbooks and blackboards; rather the recent evolution towards the classroom we see today has changed the way of learning of the students. In the modern era, classrooms are not only furnished with different tools of education but are about relationship building between the parents and the educational professionals to help amplify the overall development of a student.

Introduction of technology to change the system-

We are all quite familiar with the use of technology in the education process before and during the COVID -19 lockdown and school closures period. At the onset of COVID – 19-period virtual learning makes a platform in the education system and thus incorporation of modern technology in the education system shows its best performance to reframe the Indian education system. Many institutions, education researchers are like to switch-over to digital mode rather than a traditional physical classroom.

One of the Great benefits of the technological boom that has happened across all sectors is the development of digital learning and training solutions for every phase of life. Technology creates more engaging learning experiences for students and also provides various methods of learning like-

  1. Online learning – learning with digital tools without a class-room.
  2. Distance learning – learning over significant physical distances.
  3. Remote learning- learning from anywhere
  4. Blended learning– involves a “blend” of face-to-face and digital experiences.
  5. Flipped learning– It is a pedagogical approach that inverts the traditional method of the teacher leading learning, instead of handing responsibility over to the student.
  6. Hybrid learning – Hybrid learning is a hybrid approach that builds on the success of flipped, blended, remote, distance, and online learning to intentionally create a learner-centred experience that is profoundly personalized, relevant, and engaging.

Meaning of Hybrid learning –

It is a way of combining traditional classroom experiences, and digital course delivery that emphasizes using the best option for each learning objective. That means unlike Blended learning models, which seek to balance the face-to-face and online aspects within a course, hybrid classrooms vary widely according to the subject matter taught and the needs of specific groups of learners.

Learning objectives and progress of Hybrid system-

Hybrid course design is a delicate process that requires input from a variety of professionals to reach its full potential because it needs to be grounded in the best practices established in previous course designs as well as the individual needs of the learner.

This is typically done by weighing the needs of the learner population and their access to instructor training or digital courses, while also working to build modules that can flex to meet the needs of the learner.

Maximizing productive interaction in a Hybrid system-

Technology helped us to change dull and monotonous classrooms into a smart class, working with visual upshots, audio discourses, and other supplementary methods, makes the students grasp and absorb swiftly. It is a scientific phenomenon the more the senses are used the more calm and comfortable methods for students to fathom the subject.

In conclusion, we can say that Hybrid education is a teaching and learning model that meets the needs of students, teachers, and staff with integrated edutech tools that address blended learning, professional development, staff support, the learning gap, social-emotional learning, flexible scheduling, and attendance.

In Hybrid Education, learning comes first and can include many of the instructional approaches we are familiar with, which I mentioned above.

Hybrid learning allows a flexible approach to the learning process performed collaboratively by the student, the teacher, and the participating experts or institution. Based on the four constructs identified, the key feature of Hybrid learning is that it can be adjusted according to the needs of the learner, the course, and the other significant indicators, such as pace, time, and space. Unlike the traditional learning approach, hybrid learning could offer an array of opportunities for time and space-constrained individuals. Hybrid learning has also been found conceptually effective and applicable in different forms of collaborative learning approaches in cross-disciplines, institutional bridging, and non-format settings.

The advantage of the Hybridization of learning is it reduces traffic on campus and frees up valuable classroom space. In addition to these rather unusual benefits, some of the most important educational benefits are how hybrid courses help improve writing and computer skills. It also encourages self-directed learning, time management, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, while success with hybrid courses with group discussions and collaborative learning.

Thoughts of Hybridization in education as an umbrella term that includes blended learning, but is not limited to just that. It can say that Hybridization is a Rainbow structure in the vast sky of education.

‘Narendra Modi Stadium’ stirs controversy among the nation’s democrats

The India Saga Saga |

World’s biggest cricket field, popularly known as Motera Stadium, in Ahmedabad, was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. It has been renamed from Sardar Patel Stadium to Narendra Modi Stadium. The renaming of the arena was left hidden until after it was officially introduced.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, the biggest cricket ground ever constructed, will have its first global match on Wednesday when India will take on England in the Day-Night Test. The cricket stadium will be a part of the arranged Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in the city.

“This stadium was conceptualised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was president of the Gujarat Cricket Association at that time,” President Kovind said as he addressed the nation after the event.

Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, alongwith the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, were also an eminent part of the inauguration event. “It will not be fair for me to talk about the stadium and not discuss our Prime Minister Narendra Bhai Modi’s long term vision about sports,” exclaimed Amit Shah while expressing his views.

Not long after President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the structure, the social web overflowed with comments including by certain heads of the Congress and other resistance groups who affirmed that the renaming exercise added up to an “affront” to Sardar Patel. Getting some information about the charges, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, nonetheless, told columnists that only the Motera Stadium has been renamed and the complex would still be named after Vallabhbhai Patel.

“Not just for cricket but it’s a proud moment for India. Besides being the largest cricket stadium, it’s also one of the most modern stadiums in the world,” Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju added as he took pride in the fact that India achieved yet another milestone in the field of sports.
