Pune: A major fire broke out at Serum Institute of India on Thursday claiming five lives. The fire engulfed the top three floors of a newly constructed six-storey building inside the institute campus.  

Serum Institute of India is the world’s largest vaccine company presently catering to the production of Covid-19 vaccine Covishield, a version of Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine. In a media interaction, SII CEO Adar Poonawalla said, “The fire has caused lots of damage but has not impacted the production of Covishield Vaccine.”

He further confirmed in a tweet, “I would like to reassure all governments and the public that there would be no loss of Covishield production due to multiple production buildings that I had kept in reserve to deal with such contingencies.” He grieved over the lives lost in the fire, all of whom were doing welding and air-conditioning jobs inside the building. The Institute clarified that none of the deceased was an employee of SII. However, SII has announced ex-gratia relief of Rs. 25 lakh each for the 5 victims of the fire.

According to police and fire brigade officials, the fire began between 1.45 pm to  2.15 pm on Thursday and was brought under control by 4.30 pm. Around 70 fire personnel were involved in the operation and dense smoke could be seen coming out of the building from several kilometers away.

The lower floors of the building in which the fire broke have laboratory facilities for SII’s Rotavirus and BCG vaccines. The upper floors of the same were unoccupied. The production units and laboratories for the Covid-19 vaccine are located in another building on the SII campus.

The bodies were discovered after firefighters entered the building. The situation is now under control and recovery operations are being performed to measure the total loss of SII.

Washington: On Wednesday, Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. Kamala Harris, daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, also took oath as the new Vice President. Kamala has written a new chapter in American history by becoming the first African-American as well as the first Asian-American to be elected to this position.

In his opening statement, Biden said, “Here we stand days after a riotous mob thought they could silence the will of the people. It will not happen, not today, not tomorrow, not ever.” He pledged to be honest with the country as it continues to confront difficulties, saying leaders had an obligation to “defend the truth and defeat the lies”.

Saying there was “no time to waste”, Biden signed a slew of orders to “change the course” – mainly concerning climate change, Covid-19 pandemic and advanced racial equity. He also lifted the travel ban on 13 Muslim-majority and African countries. 

More significantly, Biden ordered halting of construction of the US-Mexico border wall and directed officials to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), among other things.

Earlier on Wednesday, Biden’s predecessor President Donald Trump walked out of the White House, leaving behind a legacy of chaos which bitterly divided the nation. During his 4-year-tenure, millions of people went out of work, 400,000 died from Coronavirus and the US Capitol riots led to the death of 4 persons.

The 46th US presidential elections held in November 2020 observed overwhelming support for Joe Biden with 93% of votes while Trump received less than 5.4% of votes which is fewer than 18,600 ballots.

In a media interaction, Biden disclosed that his predecessor had written him a “generous” letter before departing from Washington D.C. “The president wrote a very generous letter. Because it was private, I won’t talk about it until I talk to him. But it was generous,” he said.

After the inauguration ceremony, Vice President Harris tweeted “I am here today because of the women who came before me. And to the woman most responsible for my presence here today – my mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who is always in our hearts.” 

Harris’ rise to the country’s second-highest office is seen as a milestone in the long struggle for gender and racial justice across the world.

Gabba: On Jan. 19th 2021, the social media was on fire because Team India had marked their historic win against Australia in the fourth Test and series. The thrilling final game was being played at Gabba, which is popularly known as the winning arena of the opponent team. India marked its historic win by defeating Australia by three wickets and becoming the first Asian team to mark its win against the host team.

The Match

India achieved a record run-chase of 328 runs in an exciting final session to hand Australia their first defeat at Brisbane’s Gabba cricket ground since 1988 and clinch the four-Test series by 2-1. Despite the fact that injuries ravaged the team, and forced the management to use 20 players in the series, the team outshined and brought laurels to the country.

Extremely talented wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was the Man-of-the-Match for his swashbuckling 89 Not Out. His innings followed an equally impressive knock from 21-year-old Shubman Gill, who made 91 at the top of the order earlier in the day.

The bowling attack was led by Mohammad Siraj, who debuted in Melbourne, supported by T. Natarajan, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, who had two Tests between them heading into Brisbane.

India looked in control through the final session and despite losing three wickets in the last hour, they cruised home with three overs to spare when Pant hit the winning four off Hazlewood and was awarded man-of-the-Match Trophy.

Two years after beating Australia in 2018-19, India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and also shot to the top of the World Test Championship Chart. 

Minutes after the win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official Twitter account to express his joy over the win. He said, “Overjoyed, the team’s remarkable energy and passion were visible throughout. So was their stellar intent, remarkable grit and determination. Congratulations to the team! Best wishes for your future endeavors.” 

Indian skipper Virat Kohli who is currently on his paternal leave, was not able to accompany the team but conveyed his wishes through Twitter. He said, “To everyone who doubted us after Adelaide, stand up and take notice. Exemplary performance but the grit and determination was the standout for us the whole way. Well done to all the boys and the management. Enjoy this historic feat lads.” 

Sourav Ganguly, the head of India’s cricket board, said the 2-1 series victory — India’s second straight series win in Australia — was nothing short of historic. 

Fans thanked Rahul Dravid for coaching younger players after India’s stellar win. Dravid took over as a head coach for the India Under-19 and India-A from 2016 to 2019. Many of the players he coached are Shubham Gill, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar who were part of the match-winning innings yesterday.

Extensive data analysis done world over has shown that many patients with a life-threatening injury or a life-threatening medical condition die within first one hour. If the patient is shifted to a health care institution within this hour, the chances of saving the patient or minimizing the resulting disabilities are more. Hence, it is aptly called “Golden Hour”.  In the ambulance, first aid and primary treatment can be given to stabilize the patient. That is why pre-hospital care is especially important to reduce mortality, reduce complications and reduce the incidence of disabilities.

Unsafe abortions also contribute to the maternal mortality.  The new-born may be at risk due to prolonged labour, low birth weight or failure of respiration immediately after birth. 

• The incidence of death and disabilities due to road accidents and other injuries are also remarkably high.Head, chest, and abdominal injuries, severe bleeding, assaults, burns, electric shock are the main causes. Wounds can become infected if not immediately cleaned and later can cause severe infection which can kill the patient.

• Sometimes patient must be referred to a tertiary care hospital since manpower and facilities may not be adequate at primary care hospital. Life savings surgeries for head, chest and abdominal injuries, requirement of blood transfusions, or medical conditions such as heart attacks, life threatening infections can be treated in a hospital where advanced facilities are available.

• Any sudden breathing difficulty or severe allergy or chest pain indicative of heart attack, are dire medical emergencies and needs rapid transport to the hospital to save life.

• Gastro-intestinal problems especially severe diarrhoea and vomiting can be fatal, especially in children since it leads to severe dehydration and low BP. Administration of Oral rehydration solution or IV fluids can save life. Similar observations were made by the team at Ziqitza Rajasthan.
